Meta-owned social network Threads was today updated with support for direct messages, a feature that Meta has been testing during June. This is the first time the two-year-old social network has offered a direct messaging option.

Direct messages on Threads are limited to a person's Threads followers or mutual followers from Instagram users who are 18 and older. Meta says that as it expands messaging features, it plans to prioritize safety and positive interactions.

Additional messaging features will be coming in the future, including support for message controls, group messaging, and inbox filters.

Along with direct messaging, Threads is also getting a a highlighter feature that's meant to elevate and emphasize "unique perspectives that lead to thoughtful conversations." Highlighter will show up in content discovery, and will eventually mark trending topics.

I think because Threads has the backing of Meta, Meta may treat it as a kind of "loss leader" and still grow it given the revenues already generated by Facebook and Instagram. There's actually a lot of interesting features in Threads that are not bad, especially the ability to edit your posting within 15 minutes of your posting.

Keep forgetting this app exists. Like Mastodon, Bluesky. It's as if they said, "you know how there are already too many social networks? Well, here's some more. This is different, though, now there's more networks with less people in them."

Threads is great. It's got a really friendly bunch of people, and you can just share thoughts (or add opinions to topics more like Twitter). Of course, there are now some of the unsavoury types who are trying to replicate the X negativity, but there are really good tools built in to ignore them so their dross is not amplified.

If you've not given it a serious try, go ahead - follow a few nice people, add your thoughts in a friendly manner, and check out a few topics to follow.

If only other social networks had mute tools. Oh, wait.

Perception is everything. I remember when US people thought that WhatsApp was a nothing site because it wasn’t popular over there. When meanwhile in the rest of the world it had over a billion users.

People think X is bigger than it is because the media use it and Elon’s fame amplifies it. But if I’d wager that Threads already has as many users as X right now.

If there’s one thing meta understand is how to build billion user social sites. There’s no way in my mind Threads doesn’t overtake X. No way.

Maybe it will, or maybe not. Threads copied already tired format. Before Musk purchased Twitter it was already half-dead network used by drama queens to promote “very important topics” (actually: trash no one cares about). Also it is about the limits of the social network, the character limit specifically that didn’t allow it to be used as a blog (such as Facebook or even Instagram) and very limited direct message system that is useless for communication.

I'm on Bluesky. I'll eventually get around to setting up a Mastodon server. Left Xitter the day Elmo took over.
In fact they are all bad because they have all copied tired and useless Twitter format and even character limit. Having character limit in 2025 is utter nonsense. Musk purchased useless nothingburger that he won’t ever be able to monetize because network will die by 2030. At this point X is literally used by politicians and political bots, real people talking about real stuff almost don’t exist there

Good to know about this but I hardly use the app and don't think I will be needing this.

Soon everyone will have their own Messenger and they can talk to themselves. Thanks to AI they will receive responses they really like. no censoring necessary.

On Mastodon you've always been able to edit your post any time after editing. It keeps a record of the previous versions so people can go back and see what changed.
