Threads is really just Xitter, but it had a jump start of 100m+ users through the creation of an account for everyone who used Instagram, because they knew they'd take ages to get to that number organically.

I had an Instagram account, but I never used my Threads account. Didn't need it, didn't want it. So those 100m+ initial accounts were not actual users.

I closed my IG account when the moon-faced creep in charge of Meta decided you could call gay people "mentally ill", all in bended-knee service of the demented grandpappy.

You still have to create threads account if you have Instagram. I've had Instagram since it started, but have never created a Threads account...I keep getting asked to make one in the app.

It just looks like a newer version of Twitter, which I also never used.

I don’t know, @Mac Fly (film) , it seems to work well for Threads. Other sites, not so much…
X has them and they work well, I have 150 terms blocked "breaking" just in" stuff like that. Would love the ability to mute videos containing certain words on YouTube though. YouTube even obfuscated the block button and renamed it too. And "blocking" accounts on YouTube doesn't block them in search, where I want them blocked the most. YouTube likes a good narrative and can't be having their users in control now can they.

To recap, Meta has these ways to DM someone which you also have to have check for new messages and remember where you have conversations going: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DM's, now Threads DM's. Am I forgetting any?

It's been 5 years or so that Zuckerberg went on The Verge to say that a big priority at Meta was to interop all their messaging so that someone in Facebook could message someone on Instagram who could message someone on WhatsApp. They started this, then broke them apart and are now adding yet another new one. FFS 🤦🏼‍♂️

I guess my issue with all these stories about these apps is: "Why?"

Why do sites like MacRumors keep posting stories about a minor addition or change in an app that's used by so many people? Surely those people will notice these things anyway? Surely Meta will have put some popup in the user's face when they launched the app, to tell them of the new features.

The idea that because a lot of people use an app is a reason to write a story about a change in that app because it affects a large number of people, is kinda backwards. These apps have a large enough user base that they don't need the publicity of sites like this pointing out every tiny little change. These little changes are not going to drive new customers to those apps.

How about more stories about indie devs' apps? How about spending some time promoting apps for indie devs so they get some sales and usage? There are tons of apps on the App Store that never get any publicity because you're too enamoured with the apps from massive companies (with dubious privacy practices).

But I'm not using Mastodon because configuring it can be a bit complicated.
Configuring it? What configuration do you have to do? You sign up for an account, and that's it. You only configure it if you're going to spin up your own server, or move your account to a different server.

with your logic, macrumors wouldn't be posting pretty much any content. apple is one of the biggest companies in the world. a ton of people use their products, so wouldn't they notice it anyway?

That's not what I meant (and I think you know that). By all means tell us about new features in Apple apps, or some rumours about new Apple hardware, or some hardware that works with Apple software (e.g. HomeKit gadgets). That's fine, this is a Mac rumours site. But a story every time a non-Apple app gets a minor update? That's not required.

Example: The recent story about printers that need a firmware update or you need to change the default admin password? Perfect! We need to know about that because it affects us as Mac users. But there have never been stories about an update to the Brother Print&Scan app (or whatever it's called) informing us of a new way to contact their customer service.

We do not need to know that Meta's Threads app now has DMs. We will not in future need to know that Meta's Threads app has a new way of adding a profile picture, or that you can change the background of an individual post, or that you can use markdown in a post. We will not need to know that. If we use Threads we'll figure it out, and Meta can tell us in the app. If we don't use Threads then Meta can advertise elsewhere and entice us into using the app because it has Features X, Y and Z.
