Meta intends to launch Threads in the European Union next month, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The social media network debuted in most markets in July, but did not launch in the EU because Meta was unsure whether it would be able to adhere to the bloc's stringent regulations for online services. Threads can import data from Instagram, including behavioral and advertising information.

According to sources who spoke to WSJ, Meta will comply with the regulations by giving EU users a choice of using Threads purely for consumption, without a profile that allows them to make their own posts.

The change coincides with recent comments by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, who said the platform was rolling out a way to delete or deactivate a Threads profile separately while leaving the associated Instagram account intact.

The large market expansion should see Threads' user numbers take a jump. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a company earnings call last month that Threads now has "just under" 100 million monthly users. Since its launch earlier this year it has gained a web app, an ability to search for posts, and a post editing feature.

The expansion comes after several major advertisers, including Apple and Disney, suspended ad spending on Threads rival X (formerly Twitter) after Elon Musk posted controversial comments from his account. Musk on Wednesday said the post in question was a "mistake," and anyone trying to "blackmail" him over advertising money could "go f–yourself," while also admitting the loss of ad revenue could end the social media platform.
As mentioned above, Threads integrates with Instagram, so it continues to have a strong user base for such a new app. MacRumors is on Threads, and all of our content is posted there for those who would like to follow us outside of Twitter and Facebook.

MacRumors is on Threads but needs to up its game for people to use it. At the time of posting the latest MacRumors post was two days ago. Stories need to appear there at the same time as everywhere else.

Sad. People in the EU were so proud that the we showed Meta the door this time. Besides that, Threads already is pretty dead. It just has many users because a lot of people tested it and then were not able to delete their Threads account without also deleting their Instagram account at the same time. That's how you create fake user numbers.

Threads has been awesome for me so far. I’ve abandoned Twitter as it was like yelling into the void.

In threads I’ve had really great conversations with people with similar interests (game development mostly) and it’s been a great experience. There’s not a huge volume of users yet, but honestly it’s quality over quantity imo

I totally agree, that was such a scummy move from Meta, they exploited Instagram's popularity and foothold to advance a half-baked Twitter competitor... that's not bad per se, but the fact that you could not delete it was. I am glad I never tried the thing.

Eventually, if the number of users grow as shareholders and advertisers want it to grow, you'll slowly but surely will be shouting in another void again. That is what happens with large digital crowds.

I’ll enjoy it while it lasts. Zuck said something about no ads until 1b active users so maybe we've got a couple years

I like Threads overall, but in a "this could be good with some changes" sense. People need to be able to create profiles that are not linked to Instagram accounts and which have different names -- including in Meta's internal systems. In Twitter's heyday, it thrived in part because of users who never provided their real names, and we shouldn't have to give them to Meta. Also, it has to (and has opportunity to) become a go-to for news aggregation. Many people had turned to Twitter for up-to-the-second news when it was possible to post links with headlines, and Threads could fill this need now. Threads could also try to emulate Twitter's verification system (now abandoned with X), which helped foster discussion between ordinary users and more prominent users.

In short, I think the "winning" X alternative will be the site that best emulates what many of us used to like about Twitter. Meta certainly has the resources to do that, but doing so will require Zuk to get outside of his comfort zone and not treat Threads as an adjunct to Instagram or a way to harvest more user data for Facebook.
