Threads, Meta's social network that's meant to rival X, has announced it is rolling out the ability for all users to schedule posts.

Threads can now be created and scheduled to go up at a later date and time. Multiple posts can be scheduled per day, up to 75 days in advance, but it's not possible to schedule replies.

To use the feature, create a post, select the three-dot menu in the top-left corner, and select "Schedule." Once a time and date for posting has been selected, you can view, delete, or edit the post from the drafts folder.

Announcing the feature on Thursday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri added that Threads is also adding a way to "markup" re-shared posts by drawing over, highlighting, or adding arrows to the existing post. The feature is rolling out to a "few countries with more to come soon," said Mosseri.

Threads recently announced a handful of new features, including performance analytics for content creators, and support for writing and saving multiple drafts via Threads for web. Threads is also introducing X-style Community Notes, as part of Meta's broader shift away from fact-checking moderation.

Haven't tried threads. Is it like twitter? Why is it tied to instagram?

...never used twitter (or x) either.

I really like Threads. Large numbers of others appear to, too.

It's got a clean interface, has thoughtful new features from time to time, and just feels nice to post on.

Plus, it's not a Nazi echo chamber.

I don't understand why people join Threads. It has so many downsides from the start. Heavy censorship and those annoying algorithms that decide for you what you see. I hate that. I want see posts from people I follow in chronological order.

It is Meta version of X. too much of it to be honest, why use Threads instead of Faceache?
Myself, I use Faceache only and even that I don't use that often these days, I have taken it off my phone, just got the messenger on it.
As for X, no thanks, I used it years ago when it was Twitter and was limited to a few characters, but then I only used it for a month and got rid of it. I would not touch it now with a barge pole.

That’s not going to last. Zuckerberg publicly announced that he’s going to restructure Facebook and Instagram moderation and rules to be “like X”, and Meta shares resources everywhere, so Threads won’t be spared.

A good point re: Instagram

I'm in the process of moving over to PixelFed

It's definitely time to show how we feel with our actions (in terms of which services we use or not)

Hope is good, but I can’t find a single reason to believe humanity can advance beyond this endless cycle of Twitter, Facebook, Threads, TikTok or whatever comes next. It dominates every aspect of life. Even if you think you’re above it because you’re “not on Twitter or TikTok,” nearly everyone you talk to is on it all day, and they’ll be on the next garbage platform too. Younger generations are even more entrenched.

Short of becoming Amish or something, I don’t see how this ends. Screen time (really just a proxy for social media) must be nearing 12 hours a day for these people. All offline interactions are infected by it.

You're absolutely right

I just spent a few days with an old friend group who is FULLY engulfed by social media (of their particular persuasion) and it was intolerable.

There was almost nothing we could discuss that didn't cause someone to angrily react with whatever software had been installed on their brain by social media messaging

Literally even a weather forecast discussion brought out "corrupt NWS" comments

"Corrupt National Weather Service?"
Huh? What?
🤷‍♂️😵‍💫

That sounds exhausting. Social media really does install software in our brains, turning conversations into reactions to pre-programmed narratives.

Ironically, while your friend is stuck on “corrupt NWS” loop, there’s also the “trust the science” loop, as if scientists are above bias or self-interest. They’re human too, shaped by career pressures and groupthink and many (maybe all?) institutions are being damaged.

Social media traps everyone in prepackaged positions hacking our ability to think clearly. Even if you’re not on these platforms you’re still affected by their influence.

Forums are better because they allow for real discussion, not the instant, shallow reactions that social media forces on us. Social media overwhelms human capacity for reflection infecting everything.

People use Threads?
Zuckerberg said that when Threads is on a clear path to hitting 1 billion people (users), Meta will start to monetize the service.

Last August, Meta said Threads had over 200 million users.

6 months later, it wouldn't surprise me if they reached another milestone (300 million users or more?) as more and more people leave Twitter/X. That's why Meta announced today that they are going to start monetizing Threads with ads. What that means is they're on a clear path to 1 billion users.

Don't see the need for scheduling so many days in advance. I will not be using it personally but always good to know about the various options available.
