Threads is testing an option that allows users to archive old posts so that they don't appear on their profile, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

In a post on the Meta-owned social media platform, Mosseri said that the archive option being tested with a small number of people included a manual setting for individual posts, as well as the ability to automatically archive all posts after a certain period of time.

Users also have the option to unarchive a post to make it public again. If beta testing goes well, the ability to archive posts is likely to be rolled out globally as an option rather than a default behavior, which Mosseri said was the overwhelming preference based on user feedback.

When it launched back in July, Threads was very barebones, with Meta working to add new functionality on a regular basis to bring the network in line with X (Twitter). It has since gained a web app, an ability to search for posts, and a post editing feature. Just last week, Threads began rolling out an option to some users to filter search results by the most recent posts, rather than just posts suggested by its algorithm.

The slow trickle of new features appears to be gradually paying off: The app now has more than 150 million monthly users, according to Mark Zuckerberg, who revealed the figures on Wednesday during Meta's first-quarter earnings call.

The number indicates an increase of about 20 million new users since February, suggesting steady growth, albeit at a slower rate than its initial rapid popularity, when the app racked up 100 million users in its first week. Zuckerberg said in October he believes Threads has a good chance of becoming Meta's next billion-user app.

Given the enormous amount of bot accounts instagram counts in their user base I’d take anything Meta says with a large graib of salt.

‘The Facebook parent no longer reports daily active users and monthly active users. It now gives a figure for what it calls “family daily active people.”’

Between the social media bros and crypto bros they have probably stolen billions of dollars by inflating their numbers with bogus users and funny language.

Mark needs to stop. Idk what he tries to achieve with this dead network, confront Musk or what lol? Why didn’t he try to roll out this network many years ago then? People have been loosing interest in Twitter/X long ago, yet another clone like Threads or Mastodon would be just a waste of digital space, electricity for servers and of course money/investments: if no one wants the original, no one wants a copy

I think the problem with this space is that its user base was always highly inflated. Twitter never had a big user base. But it had significant cultural impact because the news community adopted it as their way of controlling the narrative in international news.

But historically, people posting about any topic vs general people in always like 10% or something small. To the point that some media orgs don’t even like posters (like us on here) as it actually hard to manage with very little benefit from a viewership / ad money point of view.

I’m guessing that the real usage of monthly active users on Twitter is probably max 250m users worldwide and maybe even less now since Musk took it over.

Based on that figure 150m active users for Threads is a pretty big deal for the short space of time it’s been available ( it’s only recently becoming available in the EU region).

I think what Meta has realised is that “news” and sensationalism doesn’t really grow the user base but makes it look like it does. So they seem to be deliberately avoiding that stuff and going for steady growth to see if they can avoid the natural plateau that Twitter found of about 250m real users. That’s the only way meta will reach 1b with this thing.

The hot take is Twitter/X was culturally relevant but not financially relevant. And meta ultimately wants to make money not just buzz.

Undoubtedly helped any the fact that Twitter is now an utter cesspool of bot-spam, grifters and the like!
I have found it the opposite. It seems like the bots have dropped in the posts I see.

I use twitter more today than I ever did. It is one of the best sources of sports news that doesn't get play in the mainstream.

Where are the other players at?

Has BlueSky not gained traction? And I thought everyone was leaving Twitter for Mastodon.

They said 150 million monthly active users. Likely this means people interacting with the app at least once a month. So not necessarily very active, but they're not counting accounts.
Well, given Threads notifications appearing in Instagram or suggestions in Facebook, I can say they certainly may get me looking at it 1-2 times a month. If many others like myself are having the same interaction, then yeah, I wouldn't put much weight in their so-called "150m active users".

That said, while Threads looks good visibly, it still feels like you're missing out on the action that you would otherwise see elsewhere with developing stories and collaboration that I often see between people on X.

I looked at BlueSky recently. It visibly looks good as well as a platform, but seeing it serve up furry drawings, anime girls kissing, dudes holding their cats, and people posting screenshots of X talking about how awful it is... I couldn't help but feel I was missing the news feeds I get.

Maybe that's just a case of not enough media outlets actively using BlueSky? I dunno.

I use it occasionally, often because a preview of a threads post on my Instragram looks interesting. It's not bad. But it satisfies the itch of not going on that other site anymore. Just too dank and musky over there.

I wonder how many of that 150 million are actually active users?
150 million according to the transcript of conference call.

Threads is growing well too. There are now more than 150M monthly actives, and it continues to generally be on the trajectory I hoped to see. My daughters would want me to mention that Taylor Swift is now on Threads -- that was a big deal in my house.

I’d guess anywhere between 5 and 10%. Anecdotal, but I don’t know anyone who uses threads but some have accounts.
The definition of an "active user" is a bit generous and covers a wide variety of people. You don't have to post something to be considered an active user. If you're logged on and you engage with Threads in some way, whether it's reading a post, ❤️ a post, sharing a post, or commenting on a post, you're considered an active user.

Even if you read this as legitimate news, it obviously had no impact on the stock as its tanking big time today.
