I am sure that the MBP's are quality products, Apple is like every other company and having issues with parts, assemblers and distribution but who can afford these things during the pandemic? Is it just us freelancers that are struggling?

Not to discount the annoyance that can be caused by losing a port that you're used to having, but something that's easy to miss about the new MacBook Pros is that they have more Thunderbolt bandwidth than the previous models, because each port has a dedicated controller, whereas the previous generation had one controller per side (with each controller servicing two ports).
The physical port being missing is the issue. Unless we get a dual CF Express B reader to make full use of the speed or a small TB4 only hub I have to use two ports for card readers to unload the main and backup camera while the third TB4 port has one of the backup drives. So I am backing up onto the internal drive first for one of the backups while waiting on a port to be freed up.

I have started to bring the iPad Pro with me to the second camera can backup to that instead to see if it is a reliable solution.

Edit: https://www.sonnettech.com/product/sf3-cfexpress-xqd-reader/overview.html has come to my attention and has an interesting descriptor on why they are using TB3 instead of TB4 for these things.

Thank you, I was just yelling at my screen about this before I refreshed the page.

Any upgrade to the stock options takes the delivery date to 6-8 weeks. I am trying to purchase a Max with 64GB and it says March 29th. That is crazy and am sure they won’t launch other products like Mini till they fix these delays.

Got the 32 GB M1 Pro 14 inch no bother at the start of the year. Hopefully in the next version we can get more TB4 ports as losing the 4th one is slowing me down a wee bit as a photographer. The SD slot taking up space is still a odd choice in exchange for a TB4 port in the age of cameras with dual CF Express B and eagerly awaiting the 2 Gbps CF Express B and CF Express 2.0 standard.
Not all cameras use CF cards.

CF was the dominate standard. It was replaced by CFast and XQD before CF Express replaced these in turn. CF Express is about to top of at 2 GB/s (compared to SD's 300 MB/s) and we are due the first CF Express 2.0 cards this year that are to start about 4 GB/s.

And here lays the problem. We as consumers lost a TB4 port so a few niche industry wouldn’t have to step foot in the 21st century. Pandering to audio engineers and “smaller” airline companies was disappointing. And I would argue it’s niche in the professional audio scene to use SD.

To say it was for photographers is BS; no one uses SD in photography minus already mentioned newbies.
Updating your plane’s avionics with an SD is just as dated as me updating my OS with a DVD.
If you use the magsafe port then you still have three TB ports available. Same as on the older machines. And the ports being TB4, you have a lot more bandwidth available per port. So the HDMI and SD card slot are just a bonus.

There's also serious problems of quality control with these new Macs. It took me 4 remplacements before finding one that wasn't scratched or dented right out of the box.

FOUR replacements?! I find that hard to believe. If there were widespread quality control issues, the public outcry would be much bigger. My 16-inch M1 Max arrived and was totally fine.

I went to the Apple store to look at the new 14inch MBP and compared it side by side with the 13inch. The 14inch felt much heavier, thicker and just didn’t have the same precision of design.

Would like to hear the thoughts of those that have bought it that owned previous 13inch. How do you find it?

In need of a new Mac laptop and debating between the MBP and MBA.

Yes we know this. We are ALWAYS going to need one more thing plugged in as there are hubs. It would have been nice if the port that superseded the 40GB TB4 port wasn’t the dated 300 mb SD port. ??

Well, I think it was not an exchange. I believe the magsafe and the extra ports returned for the lack of that thunderbolt port. So if you used one of the 4 ports for a sd card reader or a hdmi adaptor in the older MacBook Pro, now you won't feel the lack of 4 ports because they re-added those ports

We went on battery and used all four TB3 ports on the previous models. The MagSafe doesn't give nor take away anything.

The 14" might be a little thicker and look a lot thicker (looks are just that, looks!). That also means it has a lot more internal volume to allow for better cooling, better sound and more battery volume. It is so well cooled that under normal use the fans don't even spin up and the batteries last. So accept the chunky look (you will get used to it in days) and embrace the incredible performance in total silence :)

OCD much??
You’re kidding right? Would you accept a brand new sealed in the box $2500 item that was damaged?

You wouldn’t accept a new car delivery with a dent in the door or a cracked windshield I wouldn’t expect, would you?

If so, sucker much?

Kinda agree here. An older slow SD card slot like the one on the MacBook pros I could see being used by a newbie photographer or something? Seems like it would be more helpful on a lower end system like a MacBook Air, who knows. I'm just beyond thrilled I have an HDMI port!
I can't se how 3 REAL TB slots slow you down - when you had 2 shared ports on either side before on the MBP Retina? The shared ports before would create issues if you had multiple "fast" transfers going between devices on the same side.

Now it does not matter which port you use - port to port speed is "full" - that should speed you up.

And then if you need more devices - you can just use 1 of them for a TB4 Dock - giving you another 3 (shared) ports. They would/could have the same issues as the old "shared" ports on the MBP Retina though.

I do a lot of movie / photo stuff - and the new M1 is so much faster - and I have no issues with lack of a 4th TB port.

I used all four TB3 ports. Thankfully I may have a option with: https://www.sonnettech.com/product/sf3-cfexpress-xqd-reader/overview.html But this does mean replacing two perfectly good TB3 card readers with a single one.

I played around with the new MBPs at BestBuy yesterday, that notch in the screen was driving me nuts! It is funny how the new heft these machines have is very noticeable coming from the 16" MBP. The return of the MagSafe was a welcome sight for sure.

Using all TB3 ports on battery.......that won't last long. I call BS!
You know these machines are used out in the field... literally? And it quite happy goes for four hours (for the first couple years) on battery just doing file copies then you plug in for editing later.
