One model is reported to be the long-awaited full Video iPod, but Steve Jobs has "so far been unwilling to commit the marketing and other resources necessary to bring the device to market" until the market response to the iTunes Movie store and iTV can be better gauged.

Which I'm guessing means that the iTunes Movie Store hasn't been a runaway success... yet. Not that I would expect it to be, until the iTV is out and some more studios sign on.

New Video iPods with different drives

A full screen video iPOD (same size as 5G iPod now, but the screen over the whole unit), 3 configs:

16 Gig Flash
60 Gig hard drive
100 Gig hard drive

The flash has a slot to slide a hard drive in!!!

(Oooh, I think I soiled myself....)

I find it ironic that we've spent years developing a wireless communications device when we've had it all along - the letter!;)

What's that? Will it come with Leopard? Have you tried the beta?

Its probably a codename, apple may just call it iLetter.

I think this shows why he's Steve Jobs and no one else is ... he's playing this exactly right, he's not going to jump into a marketplace that does not exist and risk tarnishing the iPod brand in the process.

that's what makes macintosh sound like a religion... and makes Steve Jobs
sound like the God

Sweet!

I've been wanting to buy a new iPod but ive been putting it off until something new shows up. I really want the true video ipod but we'll see what happens. Im waiting until after Xmas and after MW 07 to see what little goodies jobs brings out. Cant wait to see iTV!!! :D

It is possible that the iTV falls into the iPod brand ("iPod TV" anyone?) and this is counted toward one of the new iPod items.

I think it was not meant to be a runaway success just yet, until the release of a TRUE video iPod, as well as iTV. I am thinking it was meant to be an introduction, as of late. Later on with the release of iTV, or true video iPod, I think they will for sure up the video quality from the current H.264 480x272, to almost double, something possibly like 860x544? Possibly higher, even HD for he iTV,.. iPods will still be able to play the video, just not in full res.

iPod sport:

I hope Apple expands their relationship with Nike and releases an iPod with integrated Nike+ and some form of wireless functionality.

It would be great to come in from a run and just leave the iPod near my Mac and have it move the run data to Nike's site automatically.

I hear ya, but it seems to me limitations in either DSP capacity or bandwidth can be made up for by a caching capacity to send decoded content to the viewer.

Input via 802.11n and/or internal HD and output via flash server. We're talking about a very space limited device here with heavy battery life requirements.

Whatrever they do, I just want it to do essentially everything in one package. TV viewer, iPod, Bookreader, remote, cell phone, videophone, camera, video camera, preferably a CC swipe dongle too.

Rocketman

And let me guess, you want it to be about $250 - $300, too, right? o_O

ugh.

maybe these new iPods will be different proportions of the same concept.

with the adition of the full size to the nano and pod sized ones now, they will all be slabs of plastic and hi resolution touch screens. with retro face images and virtulizer this is going to be the next big thing for apple. It will be like , apple, so easy its like reaching out and touching it.

Four models actually...

Shuffle
iPod Nano
iPod Video
iPhone

What is there to upgrade on the shuffle? The only thing would be higher capacity; how is that somethig to include in a product roadmap until the flash is there in the market?

Well, they could chop off any part that's not behind the controls...that's probably two years off though at least.

3 models, actually...

I can guess we'll these new models in 2007:

1) 3G nano with up to 20 GB of flash memory, but using the same form factor as the current model.

2) 6G "conventional" iPod with 40 and 80 GB hard drives about the same size as the current 5.5G iPods. They will use the new touchscreen interface with a larger LCD display so you can watch videos clearly.

3) A true "video" iPod with 80 and 120 GB hard drives in a device about the size of unit designed to Microsoft Oragami specs (e.g., Samsung Q1 series) with a large screen and that new touch-screen interface. Unlike other new-generation iPods this new iPod will sport an IEEE-1394 interface for faster video transfer to device from desktop/laptop computer.

I don't know, I am getting sick of the ipod.

(dives out of the way of sniper bullet)

Right now lots of companies are surpassing the ipod in many ways. I am surprised the ipod has not progressed much at all in the pas year. For instance the archos 04 series of players is way better than the ipod in doing video and other stuff.

As far as the nano is concerned I found a player that is too good to be true. Check out the insignia 4gb player from best buy. Hooks up as a usb hard drive, just drag music over. Has a very large screen, removable battery, FM radio with record, photos, video, music. Its not a looker but you won't care when you see the screen quailty. I got this instead of the nano and have not looked back.

I think the day is over for not including some kind of recording function on these babies wether its video or fm recording.

Apple is resting too long on its laurels. Time to step up to the plate with something cool.

I'm looking forward to it coming out.

If there are more films (movies) sold in the US then perhaps we'll be able to buy them in the UK.

It was bad enough waiting for iTunes music store to open in the UK. We know there are films for sale, we just can't buy them.

Anybody got a US credit card they don't want any more? :)

FM recording? You're kidding, right?

When a person buys an .mp3 player, be it an iPod, Creative, Scan-disk, or even a "Zune", they're not looking for an FM radio, let alone the ability to record off of one.

I must be missing something here-- why would Apple want to develop a 16GB flash video ipod? Isn't the point of flash memory (generally) to keep the size of the unit down? A video ipod smaller than current 1.8inch HDs would be uselessly small. And if the unit is going to be large enough to enjoyably watch movies, why limit yourself to 16GB when the 100GB 1.8HD has just been released?
With regards to HD and flash based iPods, when it is all said and done I see the following:

- Flash memory based iPods will be for music.

- HD based iPods will be for videos.

heyseus i hope the 16gb flash vid ipod is true. my just-over-one-year-old 30gb photo hdd died yesterday and im pist and refuse to buy another hdd based mp3 player.

Can you "rip" your personal DVDs to a video iPod the way you can rip your CDs for the songs?
