edit:

why is this?

could it be to do with the fact i added quite a lot of photos to iphoto today?

I bet a restart will fix your problems. Or possible just restarting Finder. Command-option-escape and then select Finder to restart it.

ahhhh nice one!!

just restarted finder and that did it

thanks very much for the quick and helpful response

Any quick fix without reboot?

I constantly have this problem. Reboot does work, but it's a pain to close everything down and open it all back up.

So, is there any quick fix to get it up and running again? I assume its some sort of cache or memory issue. Any console command to wipe it clean?

Thanks for the help.

I know this is an old thread, but this just recently happened to me....all of a sudden my thumbnail icon images were gone from my download/document folders that sit on my dock.

I tried relaunching the finder and finally used Onyx to rebuild....that seems to have done the trick.

The older stuff in the folder showed the correct thumbnail but the newer ones didn't.

by the way, what causes this to happen? and any way to prevent it in the future?
