Thumbnails in finder?

Is there any way to get pictures to automatically show up as their thumbnails in the finder, and not just a placeholder image?

This is something Windows did, and is rather important for me, as a photographer.

In the finder window go to the view menu and select "show view options", enable "show icon preview".
