We normally use thunderbird and have no problems usually. We've just changed isp to o2 (UK company).

We tried to update the settings but emails not working, keeps coming up as name or password not recognised even though it will randomly come back with a test email we've sent.

Rang o2 who were non the wiser. Tried to run 'mail' to see if we could just use that. the icon's there but nothing happens when you click it?

Tried to 'uninstall' thunderbird, mail still didn't work. Tried reinstalling thunderbird and thunderbird still didn't work.

Apart from throwing it all out of the window (3 hours and counting so far), does anyone have any suggestions please?

Without knowing your account settings, it's difficult to tell exactly what might be causing the lack of interconnection. Which port is being used, eg. is it 110 for incoming; 25 for outgoing? Does your server require authentication? What are the provider's rules for user name? Check the exact details of that "test email" to see why it might be getting through as opposed to those that are not.

I'm surprised your ISP can't help you. Perhaps you struck a PC-only technician (all too common). It might pay to insist on someone who is familiar with Mac mail protocols and account settings.
