Thunderbird Sending Mail Error

Ok, I just recently installed Thunderbird on my Macbook to use an email client.

I currently have an gmail account as my email address. When I try to send emails I get an error message saying, unable to send mail.

Does it work with any other mail client? What smtp server are you using? Is it set to a secure port or to 25? Who is your ISP?

Did you finish configuring the outgoing server properly?

I'm just curious, as I don't use Tbird, what is the benefit of it over Mail?
