Hi all

Long time lurker but new poster!

I have the 2016 MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. Suddenly and randomly, System Report now states "Thunderbolt: No hardware was found" and no Thunderbolt adapters seem to work. I also can't seem to use a USB-C to HDMI adapter, so I have no way of using any external screens.

Weirdly though, direct USB-C devices (flash drive, USB-C to USB-A adapters etc) function absolutely fine.

Is it possible for just the Thunderbolt chip to get hardware damage but the USB-C part still to be able to function correctly?

Thanks in advance!

Hey, I'm having the exact same problem with my MacBook 2017 . Have you managed to find a solution?

Sadly not. Still happening. Tried absolutely everything - upgrades, downgrades, PRAM reset, the lot. Still no joy ☹️

If you have a 12" MacBook, those only have USB-C and do not support Thunderbolt.
No, it’s the 13” pro. I took it to Apple and they said that it’s should show hardware for thunderbolt 3.

Same. I took it to Apple and the only thing they said they could do was replace the logic board.

Hey, just to let you know that I found a way around the hardware issue. I bought this usb-c to display link device:

It only delivers 30hz 4k to one screen but there are better models with more outputs. A lot of them say windows only but from what I’ve read, they all still work on Mac, they are just not officially supported. As long as you have the latest displaylink software, it should detect input from the usb device.
