i have a Thunderbolt display i am using with Macbook pro early 2011 model, I have noticed that slightly moving the cable also makes my screen go dark and i have to unplug the thunderbolt cable and plug it in back. I tested the same with my friends macbook air and it has no problems, so looks like the problem is with my macbook pro.
i tried to look through the forum and did not find much, did any one have the same problem with their macbook pro...

Nope. My rMBP sits in a BookArc when I am home. I use a USB keyboard and Magic mouse so there is no moving of the TB/DP cable to the monitor after I boot up. With power off, you can always clean the cable connectors with alcohol and clean microclwth. For the Macbook ports use alcohol and swabs....and be careful not leave lint from the swabs behind. Let it all dry before reconnecting and powering up.
