There are many ways for a thunderbolt chain to come to an end, e.g. Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, Thunderbolt to Mini Display Port adapter, Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.

I can't seem to find a Thunderbolt Splitter or Hub anywhere. There are some brand new things coming out, such as Belkin, but none of them appear to actually multiply the number of Thunderbolt dead-ends you can have.

Just as an example, if a Macbook Air owner wanted to connect Ethernet, a Firewire drive and a Non-Apple display into his/her MBA Thunderbolt port... what, it just can't be done? Impossible?

Thunderbolt doesn't support hubs or splitters because it supports daisy-chaining.

Basically, like this. Thus, all devices must have two ports (or if they don't, they must be placed at the end of the chain.)
