subscribing. Interested in boot time over FW800.

Why put the SSD in an external case??? Why not have the HDD external and the SSD internal. That way you will be utilising the full speeds of the SSD. As said above FW800 is only 80MB/s while SSD's are around 260MB/s.

My reasons:
1. 4-year-old iMac sans warranty + complicated self-install = no
2. Wasting even more money paying someone else to install it? …nope, something else could go wrong with it a week later and it'd all be for naught.
3. If it's faster than what I have now that's all I care about. I'm just trying to put off buying another iMac for a year or two. Then when I upgrade I can hook this drive up over a thunderbolt > eSATA adapter and get full benefits.
4. It's a neat "theoretical vs practical" experiment. ;)

I won't have any data on it. Just OS and applications. Most applications will launch almost as quick on 80MB/s bus as they will on 260MB/s bus, because they're not that big. Anyway, that's what I expect. I don't want to open up my iMac, also, I read some posts that some of these SSDs fail fairly quick, so I don't want to be stuck in a mode of opening my iMac several times to sent the SSD back in case the SSD fails.

Still makes a difference...and this is where a faster CPU does indeed help.

My MBA with 1.86GHz C2D can do the same. Faster CPU does not make your machine boot any faster since the CPU is not the bottleneck. It sits there waiting for the drive.

Plus a higher electricity bill, plus waste of energy.

RAM is the only component that will be powered when the machine is put to sleep. That uses hardly any energy. If you are concerned about energy, then you shouldn't buy a computer at all. Booting also produces an electricity peak as it requires a lot energy during a short period of time. Waking up from sleep does not need as much.

You're being bizarrely antagonistic towards one of the most helpful, knowledgeable people on this forum. He just gave you a number of very valid reasons why he sleeps his Mac instead of shutting down, something that (in my experience) the vast majority of Mac users do.

ok fair enough but the debate was not about sleep mode, I just know people who literally leave their computers on including the display without sleep mode and to me that seems a little silly, so theres no need to say "If you are concerned about energy, then you shouldn't buy a computer at all."

Wtf? And if you are hell bent on wasting energy anyway possible then you shouldn't buy a computer at all.

It's his electric bill, let him do whatever the f$%* he wants to. What do you care? I leave my computer on 24/7. Why? Just because I feel like it. Also, I hate CCFL light bulbs; 100% incandescent in my home. Sometimes I even leave the lights on when I leave the house. ZOMG!!111 Take a deep breath and relax there bro...live and let live.

Your blatant irresponsibility along with your tag line regrettably stereotypes a persona undermining the "good" of humanity.

Bwahahahahahaa! FYI my wife and I both walk to work. That's right- walk. Don't even own a car. You think about that next time you're sitting in rush hour traffic, burning gasoline and destroying the earth with your filthy pollution. Not to mention the world's oceans and sea animals, which you've poisoned with mercury from all your CCFL bulbs. Now who's irresponsible? Please, your confused and misguided hypocrisy has no business here, move along.

BTW- the future generations will hold people like you accountable for destroying the earth. Have a nice day!

OMG that was an atomic DDT.

A 27" iMac consumes 1.44W in sleep mode. At $0.046 per kw-hr that works out to.... $0.58 (12.57984kw-hr) added to your electric bill per year if left in sleep mode 365 days.
Bump that up to $0.074 for summer rates and (year-round for math) you pay $0.93/year.

So, try to understand what you're talking about next time before bashing somebody's way of life.

Maybe you need to get glasses? My comments were NOT about sleep mode, try to read things carefully before looking for any opportunity to express your personal anger and frustration.
