Thunderbolt / Target Disk Mode

I can't get Target Disk Mode via Thunderbolt to work. I've connected two MBPs, one running 10.9.4, the other 10.10. Neither direction works. Has any one else had trouble with this? Any suggestions what to do?
 
Addition. It doesn't work either between two computers running 10.10 (System Information says "No device connected).
