Getting a 2020 iMac 27" and want to use my old Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor (U2412M) but wanted to know if I have to connect it via ThunderBolt (Thunderbolt to DIsplayPort) or one of the USB ports?

The monitor has these input connectors: DVI-D, VGA, DisplayPort

Does Apple make a cable like this? OR from third party vendor that is reliable?

$15 from Amazon. Works like a champ.

Thanks so I didn't have to use a TB port instead use the USB-c port?

As I have the same problem as the OP. That cable is capable of 4k. Does it make sense to buy a bidirectional (?) and 8k cable (at double the price) for the 5k iMac?

Depends on your external display. The iMac is capable of driving 6K displays.
The bidirectional is worthless for the iMac.
If you only have a 4K or smaller screen and never plan on upgrading or using the cable with another PC/Mac, then probably not.
