Can't you just use a regular Mini DisplayPort (plugged into MBP's Thunderbolt port) to DisplayPort (plugged into display) male-male cable?

So you have a display with DisplayPort input and a DisplayPort cable, that is attached to the display and can't be removed and only works with a DisplayPort plug? Does that mean something like this (found here) would not work?
