Thunderbolt to HDMI no sound with lid closed

I have a 2011 MBP. I have been using a TB to HDMI cable to play Netflix and such to Hotel TVs when traveling via screen mirroring.

If I leave the lid open, the sound and video is output to the TV. If I close the lid on the MBP, the video continues but the sound stops on the TV and plays from the MBP. I just leave the lid open but am wondering if there is a setting I am missing?
