So they have a patent for a speaker that projects sound through a narrow slot... that's a pretty handy patent to have, because no one would think of doing that... ;)

Depends on how they achieved it. I'd assume making such narrow speakers that sound good would take some advanced technology.

I just used a new iMac today, and I was impressed by the sound quality and loudness coming from tiny speakers. This is the one patent case I'm actually interested in.

I fail to see how THX has been harmed and lost money. They don't make components for any AIO or cellphone.

They lost potential money from Apple. If Apple is using their patented designs, Apple has to pay for it if the patent is upheld as legitimate.

It's like digital piracy.

If Apple stole tech on purpose... pay THX.

If they came up with the same tech by accident... pay THX.

If THX is trolling... pay the lawyers.

Are people actually defending Apple because they infringed another company's patent?

God I own an iPhone and iPad but this is just sad.

Worst part of following Apple is all the moronic fans that defend it.

You misread his post. He was defending Apple re the "round rectangle" comment. (Since of course, that patent wasn't really as general as that old myth. Android astoturfers will take some little piece of a larger patent, and pretend it's the whole patent. If Apple invented a time machine that used batteries, these trolls would say "Apple tried to patent using batteries!" In the same breath, they'll say Samsung's version with 50 obviously cloned details that came out 6 months after Apple's, is mere coincidence...)'

Eh? Sorry if facts delude you, and who the hell is Dilger?

I see Apple's Reality Distortion Field is in full affect on this thread.

The link is to Dilger. But in short: he's a biased (to the point of embarrassment) Apple fan and blogger who nonetheless sometimes has useful facts to point out. Better to find those facts from a less biased source, of course! And regardless of his bias, you can still look at his arguments and judge for yourself which ones makes sense. Many do.

Let me say that I do NOT care about upvotes. However, I think this deserves to be on the front. This seems like a complicated setup involving precise measurements and sound wave calculations, and I don't know much about the sound industry, but it seems like something patentable:

With knowledge of your previous posts, I think you'd defend Samsung for doing the exact same thing.

Breaking news: Apple invents silicon microdevice that interprets magnetic 0's and 1's as 'data'; inventor of the computer now suing Apple.

Kind of like a rectangular phone with rounded corners eh?

The thing is that Apple would try to patent the use of batteries, if they changed it enough to look flashy. Everybody that isn't blind sees Apple as what it is, a patent hungry company patenting everything under the sun. BTW, if rounded corners are common place, why is it part of their patent?

I recall seeing pipes coming out of speakers over a decade ago with Bose. THX has NO chance of winning this. Too much prior art.

Bose licensed it I think. Bose is mentioned on the Google patent page as referencing it: http://www.google.com/patents/US20050129258

Apple didn't sue for others using rounded corners. Apple sued for others copying Apple's design, which included rounded corners. If you look at phones before and after the iPhone, it's blatant.

Same goes with the MacBook Pro. I went to Costco and thought for a few seconds that they had Macs. Nope.

I think Apple should pay licensing fees if this is what they have used, instead of trying to question the patent`s validation.

This also means Samsung should pay up licensing fees for all the stuff they copied.

THX has no money, they just want apple to buy them out when they realize paying the lawyers and the damages would cost just as much.

I have no probs with that logic. However, if THX simply took Bose's ideas and shrunk them down to a computer model then they have NO right to patent this for themselves.

One word.... licensing.
THX gets paid a lot of money for their work.
They have been working in this field since the 70's.
This particular patent was filed for in 2003 and it took the USPTO until 2008 to grant the patent.

Lawyers - 1,000,000
Tech Industry - 0

the only entities that win here are the legal ones. nothing of any value in the tech industry comes of these things, regardless of who is suing who
