There was a store on NPR Planet Money about how music festivals are going instinct. A lot was said about how there was a huge bump in attendance after Covid but nowadays GenZ's don't like to go to festivals...they don't even like going out in public, don't have friends to go with, etc. There was also a lot said about how "everything is more expensive now", i.e. tour bus rentals, gas, venue rentals and setup, yada yada. The one thing I never heard in the story was the fact that TicketMaster has completed F'd the industry and turned so many people off buying tickets simply because the fees have gone too far.

Again, not an option in many markets where TM has an existing foothold. Most venues in Phoenix for example are corporate owned.

If I'm ever able to beat the bots and actually score concert tickets, I guess I can now expect to pay even higher convenience fees to cover this exciting new enhanced ticket experience on iPhone. Of the many things I've asked of Ticketbastard, this was not one of them. How they've been allowed to run so amuck for so long is baffling.

It’s not bots, that was 10 years ago, ticketmaster also own resale sites and they move a large chunk of tickets directly to those prior to sale

so it seems we in europe have a seperate ticketmaster app that doesn't even have all these features let alone the option to place tickets in apple's or google's wallet. so we're left behind and forced to use the ticketmaster app or a pdf A4 sheet version of the eticket. like barbarians. i don't understand why ticketmaster doesn't offer wallet support over here ...

It’s not just music. MLB has switched to almost entirely online tickets and the whole thing is really run by Ticketmaster. It’s great fun for everyone when their servers go down just hours before a play off game (like earlier this week).

Because there are no other options. They are a monopoly and if you want to go to a concert, you generally have no choice but to use Ticketmaster/Stubhub.

I wish this was possible but for any event I've wanted to go to, which are almost all pretty major concerts, there's nowhere else to buy them. The venues are too large and don't deal directly, and any artists that I like just put a link on their tour page to Ticketmaster but don't offer any direct forms of getting them directly or other options. It's scary ridiculous.

For things like a local band playing at a small club, you can usually buy them at the venue. But even some small clubs around me still use Ticketmaster. I guess it must just be easier for them to not have to deal with selling tickets, even though they in turn are paying a very high price on direct sales income. I hate Ticketmaster 👿

While I’ll always prefer giving my money directly to the artists, their ticket allotment is under 10%. ~80% goes to third party, votes, etc. ~10% goes to actual fans of any given artist. Ticketbastard and Live Nation is the worst things to happen to live music. Would LOVE to see the DoJ step in and alter that whole business model. Total monopoly. And they take full advantage of that position.

It's one of those double edged swords because maybe something like this is technically better with 1 company running it and creating a smooth experience, 1 place to get a refund from, stuff like that.

At the same time, the fees are insane, they limit honest reselling sometimes (I legit managed to get 2 sets of taylor swift tickets because both my wife and I were trying to grab them at the same time, and I couldn't resell - only transfer - on ticketmaster) and don't do enough to enable actual fans to grab tickets. Just look at the Coldplay shows in the US next year. Some of the shows have over 30% of the seats already on the resale market.
