Several readers have noted that some of Apple's download pages have included new categories for the upcoming Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger release.

The new categories include:

Automator Actions
Dashboard Widgets
Spotlight Plugins

Automator allows users to setup repetitive tasks using visual tools. Additional actions would allow added functionality to Automator.

Dashboard is Apple's new mini-Application framework to give users quick access to simple Applications. These "mini Applications" are called Widgets.

Spotlight provides a new desktop search system for various kinds of data. Plug-in's would presumably allow existing applications to be searched with Spotlight.

Three broken links hardly seem worthy of front page news. Tiger is still probably a long ways off, and this doesn't change that. Even if the links are made active sometime soon, I'm sure it will just be in preparation (since many developers already have Tiger on their hands and have created some of these things).

Woah, some people must sit there 24/7 scanning Apple's web pages for clues about upcoming products! :D ;)

Well, nice to know there'll be lots of cool little freeware and shareware plugins that'll add lots of cool stuff to Tiger's new features. I guess, Apple is enticing people to write these programs.

Bring on Tiger!

Judging by:
http://www.apple.com/business/tiger.html
http://www.apple.com/science/tiger.html
http://www.apple.com/pro/musicaudio/tiger.html
http://www.apple.com/pro/design/tiger.html
http://www.apple.com/pro/photo/tiger.html
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/tiger/
I would guess that Tiger can't be all that far away....

Most importantly, look at http://www.apple.com/macosx/ which only mentions Panther as an afterthought now....

Wow, this really makes it seem like Tiger is close, really close. These all pop up today, tomorrow is Tuesday...... interesting.

Alright, a long shot.... but someone had to say it ;)

The original 3 links work for me if I click on them straight from the message above yours...

Anyway, maybe this means Tiger is coming sooner than expected? If so, I'll be surprised. I'm still predicting a release for WWDC - it only makes sense.

Wow, thanks for the insightful post regarding the Automator, Dashboard and Spotlight plug-ins - your invaluable contribution to the discussion surrounding this piece of news is noted.

Care to say anything about the actual topic at hand, or are you just interested in bumping up your post count?

I still think it will be announced at WWDC for immediate availability or a few weeks before WWDC.
The ship date should be announced well in advance.

Judging by every other major OS X release, Apple is going to hype it as much as possible. And get lots of people to show up at stores at midnight, etc....

Think they'll have a couple of magicians with a white tiger to show it off?  :) :p

Ah, but with it part of Tiger it will be integrated into the OS and "free", unlike Konfabulator! ;)

I would hope for this, it needs to be available before I graduate in June, so I can get it cheap from the bookstore.

I have high hopes for dashboard, I think it will blow konfabulator away. Same with spotlight, seems very promising.

good news.. tiger could be really close.. like mid march or april.. or not untill wwdc.. who knows

I hope it comes out or is announced before WWDC so developers who attend will be working with final version.

but on that same token, it seems logical for a post-wwdc date so developers can wrap up their tiger stuff before the retail ships and they are flooded with questions.

Humm... my guess: Apple is going to announce availability tomorrow and launch it at WWDC. If you read the pages (which are clearly already linked to on some of the Pro pages - including the "Science" pro-page) they are in the present tense, though. They aren't written in the future tense whatsoever. Perhaps tomorrow will be the drop day?

As for the Mac OS site - it's been that way since the Stevenote in January.

off topic but why did the AOL guy get removed from the iChat icon?

Because the new version of iChat connects to Jabber and ICQ as well as having multiple accounts, so having it be tied to the AOL branding no longer made sense.

I don't mean to be negative, but I'm worried about no eMacs and no upgrade of video card in the iMac. I'm worried about the rumor of no upgrade to the Powerbooks until September. If Apple could just do these things in a timely manner, they would increase market share to a pleasing degree.

iMac: There is a fanless, low power 9600 Pro 128 MB available for a year now on the PC side. Apple should have been working to get a Mac version.
Powermac: There is no reason to put the FX 5200 Ultra in computers of that caliber. It should include the 9600XT in the base price.

Such incremental improvements help people feel that they are getting their money's worth, IMHO.
