Which places would that be... old pictures of friends and family you've never really liked anyway ;) Seriously thouhg, I think very few people see it as a practical solution to just get rid of half their music or pictures or whatever. In my case the only proper solution has been to get an external hard drive where I put all ( ) the stuff I don't use on a regular basis.

Less than 40 Gb in 10 years, wow. Atypical might be the word. You certainly seem to be a lot more disciplined than most people. Being picky (quality conscious you might say) about what you get into the computer in the first place is rather difficult. At least as hard as throwing stuff out. Cheers to you.

iPhoto libraries archive very nicely onto CDs. Apple made this easy, you know. But you make my point, after a fashion: How many more photos could you fit on your HD, even after trashing every "unneeded" system file? Maybe a few hundred? You're going to need an archiving strategy no matter what!

I keep most of my music on my iPod. Over 2,600 tracks but still only 10 GB. This is not a tiny collection, but I could still keep them all on my Mac if I elected to.

I don't consider myself to be very disciplined at all. I take many digital photos in my business, and write reports all day long (when I'm not yakking here anyway ;) ). And as I said, almost nothing get thrown out. So I'm curious to know how people burn up so much storage space.

Yeah, I'm pretty curious too. I have a hunch they fill it up with (pirated)music they never listen to and films they watch a single time. And some people - lots and lots of photos. And then there's people who work with graphics, movies or 3D professionally (or as a hobby).

But let me speak for myself... just 'cause I'm so happy with my little new app:

My music collection - 10 GB, I obviously don't listen to it all. But I like music and I kick out everything which doesn't have my interest (fx I only have 6 songs labelled "hip hop")

I study architecture, so I guess that's why schoolprojects take up so much space - 8 GB. Most of those I could put on my external harddrive.

Pictures - 5.5 GB. I take quite a lot I guess. And in good resolution.

Movies - 3 GB. Imovie project. Will be removed when it's done.

Good Stuff - 2.5 GB. Nice stuff, mainly pictures, scavenged on the net, which I keep for reference and use for projects

Apps - 4,4 GB. Again architecture, Vectorworks and CS2 are some big ones.

And then 14 GB of free space...
