Quicktime 7 performance on the mini?

There are threads about this already, but performance is just like QuickTime 6.5 on a Mini.

Until you try H.264 or HD content.

It is only going to work well on a PowerMac G5 - yes, not even an iMac G5. It is choppy on a mini and all G4s (PowerBook is better a little)

correct me if im wrong... core-image can be enabled in powerbooks with mobility radeon 9700 on them right? so if it can... the ripple eye-candy can be done right? :)

Works fine on the PowerBooks. What does NOT work fine on the PowerBooks, though, is H.264 video. It gets about 15fps for 720p video. They weren't kidding when they said that H.264 needs a PowerMac G5.

Yeah. Shame really. I am hoping they do some more with smaller sized video images that use H264 to look clearer...

Wow. 1 feature won't work fully out of 200 new ones. Wow.

I'm still buying. :D

Yes, it's one of 200 or so features, but it's a feature that's been heavily promoted and discussed no end, and as it's name suggests, it's a "core" part of Tiger. I think people underestimate how important this feature could become in the future - and I for one would be reluctant to buy a Mac that dosnt make full use of it.

Yeah... I do really want a PowerMac to take full advantage of Tiger... But I've only gotten the mini two months ago, and I realistically don't REALLY need all the features right now.

Therefore I've put myself in a straitjacket. For my own good, understand.

*struggles*

I'v had Tiger on my Mini since friday and no problems at all. Everything seems to work great and fast :D

HD .h264 requires a G5. .h264 should work on anything including cellphones

Yeah, but we've no proof of that yet. The only mass-distributed H.264 content is HD right now. And 720p is clearly HD.

I rendered out a movie I made for my digital cinema class in both h.264 and mpeg4 (on my mini) and they both run fine. h.264 is noticeably higher in quality when they were both compressed to the same filesize and filesize was dramatically smaller when they were equal in quality.

I will be posting the identical filesize samples to my website when I get home (check later tonight or tomorrow) if you care to look at them. They all run flawlessly on my mini and I even ran the HD content from Apple's site. There were dropped frames, but at least the audio kept up so you didn't really notice it.

FYI, iMovie will export H.264 just fine if you want to run your own experiments. This was done on my mini still running Panther.

Well lets hope you are wrong. I think it could be a consumer nightmare if the mini doesn't get an upgrade to the video card in order to take advantage of Core Image.
I agree. An update of some sort to take advantage of a cool feature would be smart on Apple's part.

This is great news! About the non-HD, that is. I'll have to try an export from iMovie and see what kind of performance I can get.

The HD samples will run on any Mac with QT7, but it stutters a lot and drops more frames than is acceptable (frames dropped > 0). It gets up to 14-18 fps on G4 systems. It's also a surefire way to turn a PowerBook into a hotplate. It's good that they've adapted the audio to keep up (mostly), but that's not real playback. You do need a G5 PowerMac for that (other posters have said that the iMac doesn't even quite keep up, but I can't confirm or deny this). It's the nature of the codec to require copious processing power at high definition, and this not going to change significantly in the future. What will change (hopefully) is that Apple's hardware will catch up.

In case anyone still cares. I uploaded the movies to my website last night if you want to take a look. http://digitalsandbox.us
