I have a Western Digital 250Gb external drive for backups. It works as expected in Linux and Windows but when I connect it to my Macbook (10.4.11) using USB it takes 2-3 minutes of disk thrashing before it is mounted and an icon appears on my desktop.

Where could I look for diagnostic info?

In the Console application in the Utilities folder. What format is it?

Thanks for replying. I eventually found the log files - need the command line it seems. That then gave me a clue that it was trying to repair the ext2 partition on my external drive. Deactivating the ext2fs stuff meant it could load the FAT partition quickly so I'm mostly there, although I will have to work on ext2 support again at some stage.🙂
