TikTok is taking the world by storm for a reason. It is a addictive, entertaining and a great platform. I used to say it was dumb/stupid until I started following things I was interested in. great content for all ages. there are plenty of Gen X, Boomers, Gen Z, etc on there with all sorts of content across all ideologies and political spectrums

Gen X’ers think TikTok is stupid too, my dude.
Shhh🤫. We're spectators in the Boomer vs Millenial/Gen Z fight.

I guess I'm missing out. I still have yet to download the app and really do not have any interest in downloading it.

ByteDance does not get enough credit for their compelling AI which they are now licensing:

Cue the people crapping over anything popular.

In many ways, Facebook is one of the best things to ever happen. It has allowed people to connect with friends and family members in a way nothing else has ever been able to do.
No need to maintain phone lists, or write letters to distant relatives, or scour local obituaries every week. Everyone is just connected.

TikTok is great because it perfectly feeds the low-attention span of people. It's what Vine could have been. It lets people enjoy fun videos, songs, dances, educational material, and of course, another way to watch cat videos.

These amazing platforms keep growing in popularity due to how great they are. Yet it seems like there is no shortage of people wanting to dismiss them, and only seem to focus on the negative aspects.

Facebook makes it easy for people connect with others? Well, it's bad because Nazis can use it. We should just ignore the love and friendship spreading on it because hate also spreads.
TikTok makes it easy for anyone to share videos? Well, it's bad because attention-seekers record themselves doing bad stuff. Ignore the limitless entertainment and educational potential because some dummy did something stupid.

Facebook and TikTok are tools, and like any tool, they can be used for both good and bad. And just because a tool can be used for bad, doesn't mean you should dismiss the tool completely or prevent others from using it.

Good thing they shut Vine down because there wasn't a market or something... I dunno..
Vine died, it wasn't shut down. They refused to pay their top creators so the creators moved to Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. They then started trying to pay them, but it was too late as the mass exodus had already begun. Then Twitter bought it and killed it off because it was shell of its former self.

I finally just got an official TikTok account last week. I was tired of my friends and family sending me videos and having to try to open them on the web interface, which I think TikTok designed on purpose to look and function like absolute garbage so that you'll just break down and get the app and start an account.

As others have said though--a lot of the "humor" on TikTok seems like it either comes from a template or is piggy backing on whatever the trend that day was. I'm also tired of videos of teens doing mean things to people for laughs. Every time I see someone get a pie smashed in their face in order to make a "shocking" video for TikTok, I wonder if the user was concerned at all about breaking anyone's nose on accident, or at the very least their glasses.

I don't mean to sound like an old man here--I do enjoy flipping through the app. It does get really old and repetitive after a while though.

I don't look at TikTok except when on a plane. It really is a great waste of time and you're on the ground before you know it.

Unfortunately you probably permanently lose 1-2% of your brain function on the way. 😂

This entire thread is basically boomers explaining why they are boomers. “Wahhh, this app sucks according to my opinion” “I disconnect from social media!” (The forum you are viewing and commenting on is SOCIAL MEDIA, by the way. It is commenting on the media of our day-to-day use, I.e iPhones, etc).
Edit: I miss vine. :(
This is pretty spot on.

Forums are a form of social media. There are probably plenty people out there who think forum posters on the internet are morons and idiots and a total waste of time.

One of my best friends works at Apple, he is a senior manager, he has been there for over 20 years. He does not have social profiles, just Linkedin and you can not see his face. All he has is a gmail email address and that is it. And all my friends who make money do not have social profiles.

I see many people talking about boomers... well, I’m a millennial and I simply don’t like social networks as they are right now, and most people I see leaving social networks are millennials, not boomers. Basically, people on their 30s

Forums are different from my point of view, but I don’t have social networks such as FB, or Twitter, or TikTok, for different reasons.

Chat apps are different as well, as they are aimed usually at communicating with the people you care and value. Apps such as iMessage, Telegram or Discord.

However, I’d gladly join specific social networks like one for gamers, one for readers, one for discussing technology, anime or philosophy. But those interests are easier to find through a forum.

Vine existed pre-Twitter for 4 months. Twitter bought Vine BEFORE it's official launch in 2013. Everyone used this Twitter product throughout its entire run. I don't understand how I keep hearing "Twitter bought and killed Vine." Yeah, it's true, but it was theirs from almost the beginning.

Your friend doesn't play Candy Crush either.

But plenty of other people do.

Different strokes for different folks...

:p

That can't possibly be right...

The world population is 7.8 B. The population of India, where the app is banned, is 1.4 B.

That'd mean that if everybody besides people in India downloaded this app, it'd be 6.4 B downloads.

But not everybody outside of India can download the app. This would be a pretty generational thing - people aren't born with devices that can download apps, and older people generally don't download apps. There's 2 B people under the age of 15 worldwide, and 750M people over the age of 65 worldwide. 450M of those people are in India, so don't double count them, but this leaves us with only 4.1 B worldwide who could download this app (and I'm not factoring in all the people who are too poor to have a phone able to download and run the app).

All this to say... if there's really 3 B downloads of this app, that means nearly 75% of everyone who could download the app has downloaded the app. And there's no way that's right.
