Insurance companies have made a behemoth of an industry based on risk mitigation and fraud detection. "Up to" a $1000. Tile determines what "up to" means monetarily. Besides, not many scammers are going to shell out $100 for the chance at scamming Tile for up to $1000. The initial $100 investment would curtail most of the lazy scammers. Any scammer more industrious isn't wasting their time for the chance at $1000.

Ha I doubt that... If a Scammer could 10x their money by using a Tile on a $1000 Canadian Goose Jacket. Then that jacket magically disappears and Tile gives $1000 per the contract. Of course that will get abused and scammed.
I picked Canadian Goose because it's not a phone, its popular, many of the jackets are generic looking to reside suspicion of reused items..
I'm also reading this is not an insurance product but a warranty guarantee on the Tile itself. So no insurance rules here- it's entirely up to the contract users sign for this product. And if its clearly a guarantee, scammer will 10x their money.

These devices have always confused me a little bit. How do they work? How effective would something like this be at locating a lost dog?
Yep, that would be my primary use, seeing as my dog has taken to running off if she hears a firework type bang.

Tile wont help you unless they have released a new GPS tracking Tile. The Tile products I know of (and own) only work if the Tile is within Bluetooth range of your phone. Great for keys and wallets which is what we use ours for. If your dog went west and you go east looking for said dog, the Tile will never go off.

----------------

The first Tiles we had did NOT have a user replaceable battery, now they do (except for the thin one in my wallet). We'll see what Apple offers with the tags but I don't currently see any reason to switch since I've already bought into Tile and my only cost is replacing my wallet Tile every few years.

Tile CEO CJ Prober told Engadget that Tile is system agnostic, which is a benefit that it offers over Apple's rumored AirTags. "Our customers aren't forced to choose a single platform and are advantaged by Tile being system-agnostic. We work with Android, Apple and other platforms people are already using and want to use to help find their lost stuff," he said.

And yet Apple's single platform will have, day one, an absurdly larger number of devices ready to help people find their lost stuff than Tile will ever have across their multiple platforms.

As is the case with all insurance coverage providers, they will make every effort to void your claim circumstances. As an aside, whether Tile or Apple's copy product, what an unnecessary item for people with common sense and an interest in taking care of their belongings.

Yep, the Tiles are pricey but I’ve saved so much time and frustration with them that I found them worth the price. Like when I was looking for a spare key and found it in a pile a snow under som bushes across the driveway. Turned out I had lost it in the snow and shoveled it away from the house. Without Tile I could have found it in springtime if ever. Or like the time my wife lost her car key in a hotel room. I called the hotel and told them I saw on the Tile app that the key was there. They promised to find and send it. After som time I got a message from the Tile community that the key was still in the hotel. I called back, they thought they sent it, I said “nope”, then they actually checked, found it and sent it.
Just some examples how these are useful. That said I’m probably gonna change to Apple’s solution:p🤷‍♂️

I started using Tile when I started going to AWS ReInvent conferences. I put one on my keys, my luggage, and my laptop bag. They work wonders, a lot of the time you can even validate your luggage is on your plane.

Funny story, I use Tile rarely. A few months ago I couldn't find my keys after taking the dog for a 4 mile walk. Right before dusk I went on a panicked bike ride looking for them along the path, couldn't find them. Got home, remembered I had tile, asked the App to find them an an alert went off across the room from me.

I don't see it that way. Tile is an item tracker. If you forget where something is, Tile will tell you. That's their only service provided.

If you know where it is but can't get it or it's damaged after you left it behind, your Tile still fulfilled its purpose. If the item can't be located, you lost it because Tile failed, so you can be reimbursed.

Hold on. If I lose my crappy car at the mall's parking lot I fully expect to find it mutated into a Ferrari once found with Tile.

I used to have Tile on my keyring.

But I don’t have a keyring anymore. My phone is my car key and how I enter my house. My phone case serves as a wallet with its 3 cards (CC, ID, and Tesla valet key card.)

I don’t know what I’d use Tile for at all anymore. I don’t have stuff to misplace. I’d know if my phone is missing within minutes, and I couldn’t be far from it since it’d be needed to board a bus or plane or drive my car or hail an uber.

Integrity. Courage. Honor. Respect for the rule of law. Fear of consequences. Conscience. The same things that keep us from shoulder-surfing pin codes at the store, cheating on our taxes, signing bad checks, shoplifting, committing insurance fraud, stealing our neighbors mail. Faith that most responsible members of society will do the same. Like good ole Billy Graham said: When you drive your car over a mountain, do you stop before the top, walk over and check to see if any cars are in your lane? No, you have faith. 🥳
You absolutely bodied this reply.

What if you lose your phone?

Conscience, like common sense, is not so common these days. :(

What if the tile falls off? I put my tile on my suitcase, someone takes it and throws it out a window. Or maybe I attach one to my airpod case and it loses adhesive from being in and out of my pocket so often?

Ummmm. Are you expecting serious answers to these questions?

Seems to me that the answer is you lose your tile.

So in other words, you have a 10% chance of utilizing this service. And a 90% chance of not getting reimbursed if you can’t retrieve your item. (In another state/country now for example). Nice
Tile’s job is to locate. It’s your job to get it back. You can file a lawsuit or a police report or you can call the FBI.

Too cumbersome.. you really expect to take a photo of something you will plan to loose?

Well, perhaps their pets. It may work, but for selective things. I see this more to force people to use the servce, just to get money. I'm sure Apple customers will "like" this :p j/k

Tile is one of my few tech purchases in recent years that was an utter disappointment. Simply does not work consistently for any length of time. A complete waste of time.

The basic idea is good, so, I hope Apple can manage to pull it off.
