My phone is the key to my car and to my house - I stopped carrying anything besides my phone 5 months ago.

(I have a wallet case that holds three cards - my CC, driver’s license, and the NFC card to access my car when my phone is dead.)

The premium service is optional. The core product is just a Bluetooth speaker with a hook to go on your keyring.

I used these years ago. Then the batteries died and I discovered there was no way to replace them. I was irritated and not interested in purchasing replacements, so I threw them away.

Just out of curiosity, what do you use for your car keys (assuming it's a Model 3?) and what do you use for your house?

Yes, Model 3. My house I always enter through the garage. The car can open the garage, and my phone can open the garage. I keep the house keys in the glovebox of my Model 3.

I could theoretically screw myself over if nobody was in the house, power was out, and the car was in the closed garage... the probability of all of that occurring at the same time is so remote, I don't worry about it.

If I really thought it could be a problem, maybe I'd have a spare key outside the house somewhere, but I think that's more likely to cause a problem (also very unlikely) than it is to rectify one.

I want a service that will automatically download all my monthly .pdf statements from my banks, investments, utility bills, etc to my Mac so I don’t have to remember to do so.

THIS!!! Aaaaandddd not have my data stolen or sold would be a bonus.

Finally! Been waiting for a replaceable battery unit for a LONG TIME. Just ordered a 4 pack. Looking forward to not losing my AppleTV remote anymore!

Thank you for your post. I know you were not replying to me directly but I didn’t know that Tile would work without the subscription. I’ve casually wanted one but thought I needed the subscription. My keys and wallet thank you.
It's definitely worth the purchase. You can even use the Tile to find your phone; nifty little feature that I didn't know about until I accidentally squeezed my Tile and suddenly my phone starts beeping.

Why? What does BT5 give you in this specific application of technology?

Longer range and shorter response time. And probably better technology for connecting to several other devices. So I suppose they implemented BT5 since it’s possible to share a tile with several others now. And I suppose the longer range and greater data broadcasting capacity would give better results in the community find too.

BT5 is made specifically for internet of things, so it really makes sense in gadgets like these. IMHO BT5 has been the most underrated news at Apples product releases the last year, just saying...

I checked with the Tile company a while back about BT5, got an answer like “... BT5 is interesting, we’re looking into it...”. Was hoping they would implement BT5 before I needed new replacements, but couldn’t wait any longer now and got 15 new ones last week:( Well, well, I’m happy they finally got replaceable batteries at least. And BT5!;)

Really odd though if the tile only tells if you forget things at home, not other places. The logical thing would be a geofence for any other place. If they get that, I’ll go for the subscription as well:)

It's user replaceable. On the site there is a video which shows how to do it.

Now it says replaceable, but it doesn’t say user replaceable... I’m interested if it can be a DIY replacement, or your forced into the subscription to send it off for replace. Tile has been very picky over the years of trying to protect its profits and I doubt this model would be willing to risk that. I love my Tile’s, have had several over the years, but I will toss them all in trash before I have to subscribe to a service to use them.

I wonder if BT5 also could open up for direct link between tiles and Apple Watch so you don’t need the phone, or would the watch still need connection to the phone app? I think this possibility also lies within the BT5 standard but they might need a deeper cooperation with Apple to make it a standalone feature on the watch. Anyone knows?

I think that would be the next logic step (besides automatic geo-fence

I had the same thoughts, but you can see it appears to be very straightforward at the 35s mark:

Anyway, just came here to vent that I received my replacement Tiles a few days ago, just as they update them. *sigh*

Can't you just return them?[/QUOTE]
Probably. But I'm sure they'll charge S&H. Splitting hairs, I know.

However, this only works if you leave the app running in the background. A big battery drain, I've noticed.

What happens when you lose your smart phone? Just wondering.

These Tile bluetooth trackers are great for your high school children. Mine are always losing things.
One carries a bag with over $400 in tennis rackets for his tennis team.
He lost his bag once and we did not have any way of tracking the bag.
Fortunately we found it.
The next day we put a tile sport on the bag with the hope that we could track it at a school where he may have lost it.

These Tiles are not ideal because they require a cell phone to connect to by bluetooth.
An independent tracker using GPS and a cellular communication system would be better.
However, these independent cell phone trackers are larger and most use 3G which is going away soon.
A dedicated cell phone service is overly expensive anyway for one device.

Is user replaceable better? Maybe. However, note if an item is stolen, the replaceable battery makes it that much easier for a thief to turn off the tracker just by taking the battery out.

That would obviously be bad. How could I lose it, though? I can't operate my car without it. If I'm not operating my car, then I'm taking some other mode of transport, which means I'm free to be using my phone. I'd notice pretty immediately if it was lost - couldn't get far away from it. I'd need access to the internet - log into iCloud and use Find My Phone.

I can also unlock and start my car from the internet, if that's necessary.

Although both of these assume that my phone/car still have their cellular connection.

Again - we're getting into increasingly unlikely territory. There's not much point in thinking about it.
