I do love his belief in the company and optimism about the company's future, but, it still feels empty. Its like, his confidence comes from the company's balance sheet. Rehashing the same products over and over again, to sell them as something new to customers (iPad Pro with A12Z - just one more graphics core, iPhone SE, MacBook Air with a better keyboard ). That doesn't feel like ground breaking to me. The product categories are also messy. Too many iPads to choose from, iPhone is all over the place, you are paying for features, which frankly should not be premium. But, what I ultimately feel is, this virus is going to change our buying habits when it comes to buying new technology.

Apple products are in part status symbols; they turn heads, draw interest, conversation starters. But, I'm afraid, if we continue into this crisis, there is little need for any of us to really be upgrading. I know, my upgrade plans have pretty much been pushed out to 2023 or whenever Apple stops providing OS updates for the devices I already own.

Seriously, I died!
I doubt it will change consumer spending habits, at least not in the US. If that were the case then 2009 would’ve had more people with savings stashed right now and reluctant to buy new tech. As soon as people go back to work for a few months they’ll be back to spending like normal. Apple will be fine and people will be lined up to buy the latest iPhone just like they were in 2010 during the peak of the recession.

"virtual company-wide meeting"

Mostly just want to know what software they used for this. Facetime, Zoom, WebEx, ______....

None of the above. It’s not a really a meeting but more of a intraweb broadcast. If there was a Q&A session, questions were submitted beforehand and a few were chosen to be addressed.

I found a job posting on their site the other day that seems like a perfect fit for me, unfortunately, the job is located in Austin, TX and I'm in San Diego, CA (unable to relocate). I would love a job where I could work remote/from home supporting Apple. Hope that happens in the future.

If you speak French, German, or Spanish, there are at home customer support positions.

One word for you Mr. Cook: RESIGN already !

That’s two words. 🙄

This virus isn't going to change a damn thing in the long run. It's already losing its grip after 2 months.

If it doesn't, then it will be the ultimate proof for the stupidity of mankind: We learn nothing from history, and we will be just as unprotected when the next pandemic hits. And there will always be a next pandemic.

On a political level, this virus might very well bring the end of globalization and a return to nationalism. It also certainly is a great tool for wannabe-dictators and separatists.

I sincerely doubt that "this virus won't change a damn thing".

I mentioned facetime - why do you deviate to network protocols ;)

Well, you said "I wonder what Apple uses for all their employees to work and meet remotely".

I didn't take it as limited as "meeting" being the same as video conferencing. I would imagine much of what Apple's employees do remotely involves a VPN, as well as various tools (Apple Remote Desktop / VNC, Xcode Server to build remotely, etc.).

But yes, for video conferencing, I'm guessing they don't use FaceTime. (They seem to use WebEx.)

No, I don't mean that. I mean UI, high level tools (!), not protocols.
I just find it funny how 'professional' they call everything when what they offer is mostly (!) for non business hipster-style consumer usage! Don't get me wrong, I still like a lot of their stuff, my iPhone, my MBP .... AT HOME. At work... useless. I'm a physicist, try and hook their machines up to measure something... laughable and I'm not just talking 3rd party software support then anymore. They have no connectivity ...... they are what they are, a lifestyle company!

back on target....take their mail app, take iMessage, take FaceTime. The Covid pandemic harshly pushes the need for digitalization of workflows, having to replace a lot of human interaction. Many people having to work remotely for the first time..... That simply doesn't work very well in most cases with the childish Apple Software.
Others are trying, take the Ms Teams together with Outlook, Project Sharepoint e.g. (huge potential for improvements, it's nowhere near 'good' but at least it is something)... then there is Slack and other 'productivity' tools that are ACTUALLY being used by smaller companies and larger corporations meaning they could actually both collaborate. And you can actually get on premise solutions when data security will not be compromised by using a cloud server in a country which is known to have conducted federally driven hacks to help their economy (the US of A).
... But the ONE company who praises the terms 'eco-system' and 'pro' like they're the gods of the universe has almost NOTHING, that helps the professional world in this situation the world is in. ... but some of their hardware

that was my point

So your point is that Apple doesn't do everything?

Wouldn't the Mac be a rather awful platform if the only apps that ran on it were Apple's own? Isn't a flourishing third-party market a good thing?

mr. ccok has been and is a good ceo for aapl
not as exciting or demanding as legendary mr jobs

Cook gets lots of flak... from know-nothing armchair CEOs who post on blogs. The ‘fire Cook’ movement is a prime example of ignorant fools with nothing better to do than reveal their stupidity on blog forums.
Kinda like the ignorant fools who defend him endlessly

I don’t care about Windows and I’m not into whataboutism.

I only care that macOS, iOS, and tvOS work reasonably well.
That’s all he has

To me facetime is a glue that binds my family together.

To see this another way, Apple is the glue for the personal side of my COVid19 existence and the glue for my work existence. Granted there are corporate tasks on my iphone I won't even attempt, however, Apple provides a device that enables communication with the outside world.
I have never used FaceTime other than when it first came to see what it was about. Why would I want to see the person on the phone. Hell no. Turn it off as soon as I power up my phone

Whether you like Tim Cook or not. Whether you like the job Tim Cook is doing or not. Whether you like Apples' products or not, by every objective measure Apple is doing extraordinarily well (as you well know). The people that criticize Cook might be correct on a small amount of talking points, but the people who are ignorant fools are the ones who just sling it in a trolling manner. The people who defend him, who understand that objectively Apple is doing well are not ignorant fools.

That kind of anger speaks volumes.
Just responding to another poster who called haters ignorant. That’s all. I don’t have any feeling toward Tim Cook. He’s out to make Apple $$. That is all. He’s not looking out for me or anyone else. All he really care about is your wallet and what percentage of it your willing to spend on Apple.

i have no issues with Tim Cook. He’s a great businessman. He convinced people that he cares about them. He really only cares about their money. That’s his job.

Humans forget very quickly. They also want to lives their lives and consume. Pandemics actually haven’t been a huge problem in recent history, surprisingly. Even this one is not air transmitted Ebola. You have a 97-98% chance of survival even if you are infected and likely much higher if you’re in good health and not over 65.

If we knew all the undiagnosed cases, you’d see a much lower mortality. It will also decrease over time as it runs through the weakest first.

I do not agree. With all of us Quarantined at home we need Apple's products more than ever! I just bought the 12.9 inch iPad Pro with the Magic keyboard for $1700! However I did get a $480 trade in for my 3rd Generation iPad Pro. We are going to have to innovate our way out of this crisis. The crisis is going to separate the men from the boys as they day! Carpe Diem! Seize the Day!

Sorry, but technology is not gonna really be the savior, yes, technology will help with testing, but what we need is a vaccine which more on the biology side. Any tech they are using for that is far from an iPad. More like some IBM Z Mainframes to do molecular testing and actual human trials.

If I am not mistaken, did Tim Cook make forced obsolescence a reality? For instance, there is no need to make the battery monitor app only to work with thunderbolt 3 MacBook pros. the 2015 I have a very capable and powerful machine and could benefit from the battery monitor which will be in 10.15.5. Steve Jobs would never have done that.

You can’t do groundbreaking stuff every week. Also, you could argue that nothing anyone does is groundbreaking if you raise the bar high enough. Retina display? Just a bunch of same old four pixels squeezed into one. FaceTime? Done a hundred times before. Macbook Air? A laptop like any other. Apple Watch? Small iPod touch with a strap. You can go on forever, with and product or idea.
