Good. I have no interest in a 5" phone. The IP5 display is pretty much right in the sweet spot for me. Having a phone that is comfortable to handle in one hand, where I can reach every part of the display with my thumb, is more important to me than having a huge display just for the sake of having a huge display. They could widen the display on the iPhone a bit (making it virtually edge-to-edge) and lengthen the display a bit more, but I wouldn't want it much bigger than what it is at now. I would rather have a bright, higher quality, higher resolution display as opposed to just a larger display. They're not going to play "catch up" with the competition and start changing hardware just so they can play the "look, we can do that, too" game with their competitors. They're more interested in making the very BEST products in the world and setting the bar for quality as opposed to rushing products out of the pipeline to "keep up" with what their competitors are doing.

5" screen = 2 button mouse?

Since we've purchased technology (starting in 1986) we've been Apple users.

But this is just dumb.

Kinda like "we'll never have a two-button mouse" -- give the people what they want, please (if a larger screen is an option they want).

Come on, Tim! Why can't Apple release two phones in a year, one 4' and another 5'?

Some of us really love to have a bigger screen!

Why do those of us who want a smaller screen have to get stuck with the ghastly 16:9 ratio?

The 4' inch is a botched compromised that didn't please anyone.

Seems like a throw away comment. The 'competitors' havent really had to sacrifice quality for a larger screen. He's effectively saying that the iPad and iPad Mini screen's are of poor quality there, as they are larger than the iPhone screen.

That makes absolutely no sense - iPhone hardware and screen real estate are vastly different than iPad.

Silly hubris on Apple's part. One size does not fit all. IMO the tall thin screen of iP5 is a horrible compromise.

They said the same thing before the iPhone 5 "we think 3inches is the best size"

Also, "we don't think anything smaller than 10inches is acceptable for a tablet"

Never trust what people in the industry say. They want you to keep buying the current stuff.

Apple is in the business of giving customers what is best for them, not what they want. What people say they want is not always what works best.

Specifically the larger phones. Yes, I have some 6'5" friends who feel the iPhone is too small, but they're a very small part of the market. I have fairly average sized hands, any phone wider than the current iPhone is a no-go for me. I hike a lot and use my phone as a GPS/mapping tool. I need to be able to use the GPS with one hand only, using the thumb alone for touch. I can't do that on any of the other larger-sized flagship smartphones made today.

If you have small children, you already appreciate the fact that the iPhone is one of the only flagship smartphones you can use with one hand.

As to why Apple doesn't make a lot of differently-sized iPhones for different people, it goes back to the first point. A lot of people will buy a larger-sized iPhone just because it's larger, despite the fact that it would provide a worse user experience. In the end, they'd have the sale anyway, but a larger group of customers are going to be unhappy with their experience than would otherwise have been the case. Apple won't do that.

Others value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability. Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display.

How are any of the bold problems listed a problem with a larger screen? I understand power consumption and resolution, but the rest have nothing to do with the size of the screen and the HW running it.

Wow Tim... WOW!

This sentiment is so ridiculously obnoxious.

I am 6'1" with pretty average hands and I can easily use my 4.7" nexus 4 one handed. I can even reach the top right corner! It's easy. It's shocking to me that people on this board say 4" is awesome, and 5" would be absurdly huge. Think about that for a bit.

Also, lay an iPhone 5 on top of a larger phone like the GS3. Look at how SMALL the real size difference actually is. It's just poor design on Apple's part that their phone has such a huge bezel on top and bottom. Cut the bezel down, increase the screen, you have a much better device that is negligibly bigger.

Could easily be a double bluff

however, if it isn't I am happy with the 4" phone and 7.9" tablet alternative atm, but I would like a 4.3" diagonal screen so it 'feels' bigger.

As for 1080p on a phone - who are you kidding?? It's pointless!

Different users have different needs. Last time I checked Apple has several Laptop models and sizes. Why is that so?

Exactly!!! I'm so glad Cook and Apple don't listen to the Samsung Android sheep. The exact same reasons Tim gave are why I like the iPhone size better. I even prefer 3.5" to 4". And don't get me started on the ugly neon greens and blue whites that you can see a mile away on someone using a AMOLED phone.

Agreed, if I recall isnt the iPhone 5 screen one of the ones that has a slight yellow tint. I own one, but have nothing to compare it against.

Edit: Yep, it is the iPhone 5: http://www.kanyetothe.com/forum/index.php?topic=312426.0

People think its yellow because they're comparing to what they've always known which are screens biased towards the blue tint i.e. colder calibrated displays. iPhone and retina iPads however are very close to true sRGB which is what you should be aiming for.

Honestly I'm kind of sick of iOS devices, I bought a Galaxy Tab 10.1 a while back, and so far I think the experience is so much better overall compared to iOS.

There are certainly things that iOS does better in such as performance & app support, but for me those aren't really deciding factors anymore. Android 4.2 performance today is very comparable to iOS, just slow by a small margin I guess..

The iOS experience has remained stagnant for quite a while, It's still probably the fastest mobile platform, but honestly that is not enough for me. Let's be real nothing significant has changed in the OS. It's still the boring row of icons it was since the release.

If I were to buy a phone today It'd probably be Nexus 4, or Samsung with a custom rom, I hate the touchwiz interface :p.

Interesting phenomenon going on here. Usually, anything Apple says, the fans rationalize and agree. Most people here are posting that Tim Cook is just wrong. I have an S3 and an iphone. I have no problem holding the S3. My eyes love the larger screen. Those that think the size is just perfect should try a larger screen for a day. They'd not go back.

Yes, the battery life is better on the iphone.. but not allowing the user to swap out the battery for a spare is so limiting. Even with a longer battery life, I often find myself out of juice. With my S3, I just swap for a fresh battery in about 10 seconds.

Apple is just arrogant. They were game changers but they then sit back and slowly evolve while others surge forward. It is a recipe for disaster for them. You can't rest on your laurels forever. You can't continue to believe your own press and the fanboys. That huge advantage they got by being very good and first is now clearly waning. Making the iphone 5 longer but not otherwise bigger was a HUGE mistake. To prolong it may put them irretrievably behind. The comment about the bezel is right on. My S3 is only slightly larger than the iphone. It is all that wasted bezel space that makes most of the difference!

As for the comment about boring rows of icons... I've always thought that was like a PC. You would think that Apple would have the widgets allowing for seeing your calendar, the weather, quick buttons for important phone numbers. Palm Pilot had it before the iphone... and the iphone comes out with less functionality...and looks like a PC to boot. The longer iphone 5 screen just allowed for another row of icons. It seems so ostrich-like. People want a screen with functionality. Maybe you just can't do that on that tiny screen.

The Steve Jobs idea of not listening to others but rather telling people what they want works sometimes...but not always... and Steve is gone (and so is his 2 button mouse). It sounds a little bit like USSR and China. Planned systems from the top down are doomed to fail.

The fact that there are so few fanboys here tells you the tide is turning. Never saw this before.

Most new smart phones 16 x 9?
Why is apple botched for going from 4:3 to 16:9???

i dont need 5 inches time... just 4.3, 4.5, 4.7....

some options 4 inches coupled with the narrower view turns me off.... SG3 then HTC One when prices come down a bit

Always found this interesting. Emphasis mine.

I do believe Tim is talking out of his ass here. Phones like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 both have a higher resolution and higher PPI than the iPhone 5 and no they do not sacrifice battery life.

White balance? Seriously? lol Yellow screens anyone? I've personally had to return 9 iPhone 5's due to yellow screens among other issues. Even the one I kept had a slight yellow hue and nowhere near a perfect white colouring.

As much as I love Apple they do talk alot of **** these days.

Let's hope a 5" screen without what he calls "compromises" never comes about. I could only accept a little more than 4".

I don't know about the HTC One or the S4, but I've seen the S3 and Nexus screens, and although the specs are better, they look significantly worse.

"My view continues to be that iPhone 5 has the best display in the industry."

Delusional.

It's not even as good as last years HTC One X, let alone the new One. Having said that I think the move to 1080 displays is ridiculous.
