Interesting wording though. He didn't say "we will donate the same percentage of each sale to Product(Red)" but that a portion of all iPhone 7's go to the cause.

I would assume that a higher portion of profit from Product(Red) sales go to the cause than a regular iPhone 7. Assume. I have zero issues with a portion of the regular iPhone sales going to the cause. But if you're buying a Product(Red) product I would assume a higher portion is a charitable donation.

As a huge market, I was hoping that this would give a lot to the cause. However if it's just a regular smaller portion then this new colour will bring nothing more than a normal sale in. I would have preferred to see him say "we will match the portion of sales from the red iPhones to Product(Red) and the same portion of regular iPhone 7's to the cause".

Then again it could be a miswording - I didn't know that all sales had some charity donation. Good on Apple if so.

You're WRONG!!! A pox on you and your grandchildren, their best friends, along with their barbers!

;)

I forgot about the unhinged personal attacks for someone having a different opinion.

Whew! I feel like I have my Internet mojo back.
Not the best friends' barbers!!!!!!

I already posted this in the discussions in the other China/Product Red Article, but starting from this year it is against the law in China for a foreign NGO to promote their cause via a profit-earning organization.
Yes, finally, someone hit the nail on the head! Looks like the second paragraph of Article 5 of the general provisions forbids RED from being part of this equation because Apple is a for profit company, so by their laws, the NGO can't partner up with Apple for this endeavor. Not only would they be promoting their cause via a profit earning organization, but the profit earning organization could use the association with a charity to promote their profit making. Interesting.

Are you seriously upset a small (minuscule) portion of the cost of your iPhone went to (Product)Red efforts?
You're confused. Product RED products are supposed to have a portion donated. Not every other iPhone. I am curious to know if Tim misspoke or if they really are donating money from normal iPhones to Product RED. And to be honest, I'd rather my money only go to Apple, unless specifically noted.

Apple is a private company that can do what it pleases. I'm sure they donate to causes that we as individuals would rather not or seemingly contradict each other, whether it be donations to the DNC and/or GOP (granted they are heavily disproportionate).

Again, you don't have the answer to my question. You're still confused. They can do whatever they want with their money, that's not the point. They point is the ambiguity that Tim Cook presented when he said "all iPhone sales", which, if it is the case, why even have a Product RED iPhone? There would be no point.

So am I confused or just reading what Tim said? Granted we don't have the full context. Regardless if the Red iPhone isn't marketed as (Red) but they are still donating, doesn't it stand to reason they donate "x%" of total iPhone sales to (Red)?
[doublepost=1490291648][/doublepost]Current disclosed amounts amount to 130 million (http://www.idownloadblog.com/2017/03/21/apples-productred-contributions-have-topped-130-million/) through various products including accessories, you can draw your own conclusions I suppose.

Additionally consider from the source itself (http://www.apple.com/newsroom/2016/...than-ever-to-join-the-fight-against-aids.html).
[doublepost=1490292793][/doublepost]Assuming each iPhone and only each iPhone was considered into donation formulas it would account to 13¢ per iPhone over the course of every iPhone released. (https://www.lifewire.com/how-many-iphones-have-been-sold-1999500)

If you consider and factor in other products/iTunes donations/app tie ins/etc. that is likely reduced significantly, but then you also have to consider how many (Red) iPhones are actually sold, and whether or not they recoup and cost by boosting margins (for example 25% of every (Red) product goes to (Red) but margins of other non (Red) phones are high enough to cover shortfall/loss).

After looking at the numbers, it is very likely Apple is donating a certain percentage to (red) and using the brand licensing in partnership to promote the brands and raise awareness of the efforts.

Whether it is clever accounting or not, by buying Apple Products you are helping fight aids and other debilitating diseases without knowing it (http://www.apple.com/product-red/).

So feel good that by shifting money and doing business with Apple, you are allowing them to help other human beings better their lives and fight aids as well as help children being born who regardless of your judgments have this disease regardless of their choices-for their lives until a cure is found, or it is eliminated from the earth.

Indeed you are. And you clearly have way too much time on your hands. Maybe Tim will clear up what he said. I personally don't care about fighting AIDs at all, so here's to hoping that money goes to Apple to make better products.

I've laid out the case, feel free to arrive at your own conclusions whether it is a flat percentage or clever accounting you are helping fight AIDS.

Too much time?
To think, research, and reason?

Always run to petty insults that have no value to the discussion when you can't argue and defend ones position or idea.

Plus red is very auspicious in China, so they can easily market it as a lucky color versus Product Red for the rest of the world.

Interestingly the demo models in my local Shanghai Apple Store all have (PRODUCT) branding. I can't say for certain the retail models do though.

I've only seen one in the wild so far and I couldn't exactly stop the girl to ask what the back of her iPhone says.
