I suspect since Amazon put Toronto in its top twenty list for HQ2 ol' Tim figured he better get up there and check it out. Apple starting to get complacent...better watch out!

Tim Cook made his first appearance in Canada today as the head of Apple with an unannounced visit to Toronto this morning.

Just before noon local time, Cook made a surprise visit to the company's retail store at the Eaton Centre shopping mall, reports The Globe and Mail. Cook was pictured alongside young students attending an Apple Field Trip, an in-store initiative that introduces kids to coding, podcasting, and other creative skills.

Cook's stop in Toronto follows a trip to Harlow College near London, England on Friday, in line with Apple's announcement that its Everyone Can Code initiative has recently expanded to 70 colleges and universities across Europe. Last week, Cook also visited Reno, where Apple broke ground on a new data center.

Cook has served as Apple's CEO since August 24, 2011, after the late Steve Jobs resigned from the position for a final time.

Update: After visiting the Eaton Centre Apple Store while in Toronto, Tim Cook attended a Maple Leafs game with hockey analyst and former player Nick Kypreos.

While at the Eaton Centre, friend of the SyrupCast and freelance tech journalist Josh McConnell interviewed Cook. Speaking to Canada’s app development ecosystem, Cook told McConnell, “Canada is an extremely important market for us. We have a great team in Canada.” He went to add: “I want to do everything I can do to highlight their innovation, their companies and their work, because it is a critical part of the entire user experience. I wanted to come say thank you.”

To that end, Cook then made his way to Shopify’s Toronto office, located near the corner of King and Spadina. At Shopify, he met the company’s CEO, Tobias ‘Tobi’ Lütke. In a tweet sent from his official Twitter account, Cook thanked Lütke, in both English and French, for showing him what Shopify is doing with augmented and virtual reality. While Apple was slow to publicly embrace VR and AR, Cook has been bullish on the latter technology. For instance, during the company’s Q4 2017 earnings call, Cook said, “I view AR as profound. Not today, not the app you’ll see on the App Store today, but what it will be, what it can be, I think it’s profound, and think Apple is in a really unique position to lead in this area.”

After his visit to Shopify, Cook met Oshawa-born R&B artist Daniel Caesar. The 22-year-old is nominated in two categories for the 2017 Grammy Awards — Best R&B Performance and Best R&B. If you need an introduction to Caesar, look no further than his incredible duet with Chance the Rapper, “First World Problems.”

Tsk Tsk reporting has been lacking.

Only got to Canada now? Tim, you don't get out much? And as a Vancouverite I have to say Toronto?????????

This is becuase your city is dwarfed in population to Toronto's Also there was a MAJOR Tsunami warning early this morning due to an earth quake off Alaska. Sure this doesn't affect his Visit yet we have more technology focused business and artists coming out of the GTA than Vancouver.

I do expect a major visit to highlight culture in Vancouver yet more focused on the natives and their history and cultural influences there. Vancouver does have cleaner air (due to the ocean) and a nicer looking city!

possibly.

According to Bloomberg ... they don't expect Toronto to be selected for these reasons:
Higher business tax than any state in the USA
Employee cost is almost equal.

Then again Amazon does have a book shipping factory since 2005 in Toronto.

The Samsung store that's just opened on the north side, on the other hand, looks large from the outside ( I've yet to go in there ) .

I went in soon after it first opened. I was impressed with the interior design; beautiful store. But I was quickly reminded of what sets Apple apart.

I was interested in Samsung’s Gear Watches so I walked over to the table. It had a massive clamp locking down the watch that obscured the entire left side of the watch. There was also a separate wire locking down the band. So much for trying it on. So I tried to at least check out the UI. Didn’t work, it was running a demo loop.

I wandered around some more and saw the gear VR. I put it on and was told that this was just a display model. Doesn’t work.

This place is called the Samsung Experience Store. Really.

Really cool that he had the awareness to tweet in both official languages.

On a related note, I wonder if that might be the reason why Canada isn’t part of HomePod initial release (English is the lone official language in US, UK and Australia).
