Happy to know maps is a first concern about buying a product. " so i got a great camera, new sleek design, bigger screen, LTE.... Ohh my maps "suck" i need something new?" Get over it. I have used maps plenty and nothing is wring with it. People just like to complain about anything and everything. Go make your own maps if you dont like it

Best in world except for the retina MacBook Pros with LG screens which are crap. If you get one with a Samsung display then you are lucky.
I wonder when LG-screen inflicted Retina MBP owners get an apology or a fix. Probably never. Mac market is not important enough.

Not relevant. Google did not enter a mature market.

Of course it's relevant. And it has been deemed relevant by numerous reporting agencies, specifically. It's not about the "market" and its maturity, it is about the product. Apple doesn't get to steal Google's database. Just like Google developed its product and went through growing pains, Apple is now developing its product, and facing the same growing pains. It has to develop and mature its database in the same way Google did. There is not magic switch to grow a perfect data base of that global size. I can only imagine there are 100's of millions of addresses.

I don't think Apple see's it that way. Their plan is to partner with Map Database providers like TomTom and others. There partners have been around for a long time and they stand by their products. The problem here appears to be in the actual processing of the data by Apple. The TomTom CEO said in a statement that he stands by his data and that if Apple needed help to resolve their problem his company would be happy to help. Of course you have people here that say the TomTom data is crap and others that say it is great. Time will tell who is right.

SCREW all the haters! Maps has been working fine for me and will continue to

uh..no..ask tim crook.

How about you ask those people if they would agree with you on that.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple disagrees.

It's OK - Tim has given you permission to put the kool-aid down just this once.

Yeah, I hope they change that to a darker color or at least give us the option to change the color. I'm not too happy with the blue upper bar (with carrier info, signal strength and battery life) either.

Yea - wtf is with the white pad? Apple has sucked at letting people mod the UI since the AppleII - iOS is no different - why?

Maps aren't even that bad, they're actually quite good in most cases. People need to calm down.

Ever tried using a Street directory... UBD ? Tear out a few pages then try going to unknown territory ...

Scuffed hardware ...
Shitey maps ...

Wow .. wtf is happening with iPhone? I can feel the decline already.

iPhone 4S it is then .. the best iPhone since iPhone :D

Just a wild guess. But I guess they're trying to locate the root problem. If there is something wrong with the code or whatever that's causing these. That's a better final solution imo then manually correcting thousands of small errors manually

Eh - 90% of what I've corrected can't be corrected with out knowing unique info - IE showing the business at the actual address when the entrance is on a side street (the address of the place is a large high-rise but there are multiple businesses there) or Apple maps has several places in that have recently closed.

Other things - a bridge recently closed and it's still showing up. To be fair Google Maps is showing it too - but there is no way to tell Apple that a bridge has closed like you can say with Google.

I think Apple would have saved itself a lot of trouble if alongside releasing Maps, they made the Google Maps application they were shipping before available for free on the App Store. They still have a year left of their contract with Google, so it wouldn't have hurt to release it as a standalone app. That way they push for their new maps app while also giving their users the option to use the previous maps app if they have problems with the new one.

@ Evoken: True, they would save themselves a lot of short term trouble.

But, I do suspect that had Apple done that, everyone will end up installing Google Maps, and Apple Maps won't get the feedback it needed to become an amazing product. Of course, we can't know this, so this is just my opinion.

Sure, but considering that Cook is already recommending alternative map apps and that people on their own are opting for alternatives, I don't think the result would have been much different.

Cook made a great step.
By offering a number of better than Google real map apps, it further decreased importance of Google spyware maps and also earned time crucial to improve Apple's offering. When Apple maps will be improved, there will be more place for Apple maps as a default and a number of professional map apps without data stealing by Google, all the best.

By "data stealing" do you mean the storing and monitoring of your map search and usage data? Are you sure that your search and usage data is not being monitored by Apple and other non-google map vendors?

It's been pointed out elsewhere and even in this thread, but the reason Tim Cook pointed out alternative Apps is because Apple's Maps disaster isn't going to be over anytime soon. Are we talking years? Only Apple knows, and probably not even them.

So, Tim Cook came out with a "mea maxima culpa!"

Trouble is, forgiveness is gonna be long in coming, because every time you slide to unlock, Maps is staring you in the face.

Why would I use a crappy web app ?
I've PAID for products claiming to provide a real decent and working Map App: I have paid for them, I own them
Apple claims to provide this App in their ads and website etc., they just have to, especially given the fact that they used to and that they can: it was there only 2 weeks ago.

Give us Google Maps back. NOW.

You really need to get over this idea you have that you 'own' any piece of software (unless, of course, you actually wrote the software code yourself). You received a license to use software written by Apple. No where does Apple guarantee that they will never change the software in any way they see fit.

Apple? Of course not! We all know it is only Big Evil Google who does that sort of thing!

Americans, please.

Maps = global map not USA map.

So yes, Maps sucks.

Same for Siri. There are more Portuguese speakers than Japanese so at Apple, they strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to their customers (chosen customers).
