I guess where you have it wrong is by still thinking Apple is a premium brand with premium products.
Apple is now a MASS PRODUCTION company with MASS PRODUCTION products.
The aim is not making the best product, it is making the most money. They turned to short-sighted short-term policies.
They don't care about their product or customers.

they are becoming the windows of smartphones.

The contrast to that is the very profitable and huge growth and all revenues they get from their search business, their only source of revenue.

Advertising. Which is what all their offerings revolve around. But don't mistake Google offerings as profit centers. Google does a lot of stuff... just to do stuff basically. Google employees get a lot of latitude towards what they can work on and they get free time to work on it during company hours (I think it's 1 day per week). A lot of those innovations become Google services, even failed ones like Wave. Others become more successful like

And why do you say Google have failed in the OS segment ? Android is highly successful as a mobile platform, I don't see their failure there. Not to mention that Google did cut back quite a few projects in recent years that weren't up to par (Source.).

Because some people feel (even after Tim Cook came out and said that Maps wasn't their finest moment) they have to defend Apple at all costs.

I wonder if those people would stand up to Tim and tell him he's wrong about Apple's offering ? ;)

Don't care what google employees do when they are free from stealing others' privacy. They sure create a lot of crap.

No one is stealing your privacy. You're free to give or not give information to Google all you want. No one is barging into your home and getting info on you you don't want them to get.

Maybe Apple should stick to areas it is competent in to grow their business. They haven't quite had much success in the service arena for the past decade. The iTunes store is about their only success story there and it doesn't even register as 10% of their revenues.

Not to mention all their other online services failure like MobileMe or Ping...

The contrast to that is the very profitable and huge growth and revenues they get from their Mac business, their iPad/iPhone offerings (especially those).

I agree here. Apple needs to stick with what they do best.

No, Google was willing to support turn-by-turn navigation in iOS. Apple just didn't want to agree to Google's terms.

Apple needs to face the fact that Apple makes the best phones but Google has the best maps and map data. Put the "thermonuclear war" aside and THINK OF THE CUSTOMER FIRST!

OH LOOK! Only a couple days after my post, an official statement comes out backing up my claim

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1455470/

Where's your evidence?

Hyperbole followed by a blanket statement. We've got some keen wit and insight right here, folks.

Google is dumb cuz olol evil.

Funny coming from you, I just saw you compared the maps situation to exploding phones that kills children in another thread.

I don't know, but it seems a bit hypocritical to me. Hyperbole? Well, pot meets kettle.

Okay. Sigh. Good god. My reply was an openly and obviously sarcastic response showing how some people will attempt to excuse away anything Apple does wrong using averaged numbers and thin justifications.

Dude guy above was sprouting the usual Google steals, spies on us, and is stupid line you see so, so very often around here.

Certainly you can tell the difference.

I understand the purpose, but that is pretty much the exact definition of hyperbole, use exaggeration to evoke feelings. I pretty much guarantee that no one would make excuses for exploding phones that kills children.

Or to drive a point home. My point was different from his point. I was using my argument to show the ridiculousness of some other people's arguments here, whereas he was demonizing Google using the now tried and true blah they're evil cliches.

I pretty much guarantee that no one would make excuses for exploding phones that kills children.

I dunno, man. Considering some people around here, I'm willing to be you'd see a few "you shouldn't let kids play with it, idiot", or "Apple isn't responsible for how you abuse your phone" lines getting tossed about.

It's kinda scary. : |

edit: Yeah. What Knight posted. See? :p

Scary. : |

"you aren't using it enough thus it sucks"

HA! My exact sentiment after reading the letter and posted as one of the first few comments!

How about, "If you don't use our maps, we won't bother fixing it"

Classic case of its better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. Fixing it oe rolling back to the previous version would have delayed the launch far too long.

Has the term "Mapgate" been coined yet" I'm sure it has, me not keeping up with news and blogs. Do the new maps run on anything with ios 6, or just the iPhone 5?

It's the iOS6 default, though you don't get all the bells and whistles unless you have a 4s or 5.

Which is one of the reasons why I'm so pissed. Sure, the newer iPhone people lost a good deal of map data, but at least they got 3D cities and turn by turn navigation.

I'm using a 4, and didn't even get that. :(

Don't buy it

obviously selling your customers crap is acceptable and just dandy.

Then don't buy an iPhone because one App isn't as good as you would like!

It's not crap. It's one App that some don't like and there is a lot of Apps that are
crap in the App Store, does that make Apple & the iPhone crap? Googles first attempt at phones & their own operating system was crap that they sold. As time went on Android got better just like Apple Maps will. S.J had his reasons his discontent for Google, he had some of his creations stolen & copied once again! Nobody thought the iPhone was going to be anything more then a novelty gadget! When they released the first iPhone my wife waited in line and surprised me with it, as soon as I used it I knew right then, that was the future of smart phones! All who have followed are nothing more then spin offs of the iPhone! I see nothing wrong with that, it's good for competition as long as no one steels patents which right now everyone is in litigation for.

I just can't believe the level of expectation for anything Apple is 100 times that of anyone else!

My brother just switched to an iPhone for the first time, who swore by droids & even an S3 and just this morning we talked about how he liked his iPhone. He thinks there is no comparison to iPhone, he did say he wished it still had Google Map as he liked it on his other phones and used it on his iPad. But in his words
"Definitely not a big deal & that Apple Maps will do". He went on to say there will be other alternatives as Apple works it out with Maps!
His current project with a very huge company is an analysis on Smart phones to decide what phone their company will be going with? Currently it between the iPhone & a Windows phone. I'll be curious to see what they go with as my brother is the most fair & honest person I've ever met, so his analysis will be absolutely thorough and fair! He said Maps will have little bearing on the decision due to the availability of Apps for Turn By Turn!
