Apple CEO Tim Cook has said Apple will continue to hire employees but in a very "deliberate way," following reports that the company had plans to slow down its pace of hiring amid fears of an economic recession.

“We are making deliberate decisions about where to invest our money, but we're continuing to hire, but we're just doing it in a very deliberate way," Cook said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Apple had planned to slow down its pace of hiring and spending growth, focusing only on key positions.

Cook's comments came after Apple reported all-around positive earnings for the third quarter of this year, that came in slightly above analyst expectations.

Yeah, I mean nothing about this was official. Simply a Bloomberg "report" that was spun into global headlines because of the name attached.

What does he mean by deliberate? Why do always CEOs use this new words for us the peasants =(
It is just a way for them to make it seem like they aren't slowing down the hiring, just making it more deliberate and without waste aka they are slowing down hiring but want to use big words to make it seem like they are in fact not slowing down.

So before he was OK with just off the cuff whateveryouwant hiring? BS.
He's just confirmed what the Bloomberg report said: "...focusing only on key positions."
Or in other words, they are recessing their willy nilly hiring.

As a layman, I admit I don't understand how one of the world's richest companies works RE: shareholders and perceived performance, etc. But we learnt today that Apple made more billions than ever in the last quarter. Surely they can just hire everyone? Surely salary becomes irrelevant? Just take someone earning $75k and entice them with $200k? Their wage bill must a tiny fraction of profit, let alone revenue. Why would they have to reign anything in?

Sure thing “deliberately” sounds much better than “slowing down” … reality is, they are slowing down on hiring making deliberate decisions LOL

From the earnings call transcript:

2:54 pmQ: Hiring slowdowns?

A: We are being more deliberate in hiring, in recognition of the realities of the environment.

Companies are making hiring decisions more carefully/cautiosly in consideration of an uncertain economic future. Apple is as well. The prudent stance to take.

Nothing to get the shakes about thinking there's something weird or nefarious going on. "Deliberate" is the perfect descriptor.

what he is saying is headcount hasn't changed but the vetting process is probably a bit more rigorous as to insure better fits reducing costly turn overs.
This, exactly. Labor is expensive and turnover is money down the drain.

And if I had to guess, not all empty positions will necessarily be filled. Instead hiring will increase in some parts of the company and remain stagnant or decrease in others. In other words, not much to see here (other than a CEO saying the right things).

My apple contact has worked there for 6 years, but he talks rubbish. This is the man that says the M10 chip is already in production , the PlayStation 6 is shaped like a piece of meat and that all laptops in 2030 will have 1 exabyte hard drives as standard

Is deliberate a big word?

In this context, I interpret it to mean that they are being more considered with hiring, going through their needs more methodically, and probably casting a more discerning eye on potential hires. As compared to times of rapid expansion when companies may just hire people based on being good talent and in the market, and work out where to put them later.

Agreed, this whole mentality left me thinking if hiring became a free for all.

Really? And apparently that kind of free-for-all hiring mentality in the past is what lead Apple to be one of the most successful companies in the world?

Any company's HR will always hire deliberately based on qualifications, but Cook saying something like that can be interpreted as Apple hired in free for all in some teams. See: Apple Car, MobileMe

Well... that's the way you interpreted it. In that case, based on Apple's past incredible demonstrated success, Apple should continue on with that strategy.
