There's been speculation that Apple may use the super-hard sapphire to produce scratch-resistant screens for future iPhones.

I was suspicious about this from day one.

After I got myself a watch with sapphire glass some time ago I have obviously googled it up.

Sapphire glass is more or less exclusive for watches for a reason. Sapphire glass, like any other crystal or real glass, can break and when it does it shatters into many small sharp splinters. That has a health risk potential. But watch's surface is small enough for the crystal to be resistant to the most usual causes of breaks and thus probability of shattering is very very very small. That negates the health risk factors, making sapphire glass allowed for watches.

I think people should look into other applications - not iPhone screen - the aluminium oxide might be suited for. iWatch screen is the obvious one. But who knows what else it might be useful for.

He also said that investors should plan to hold Apple stock for the long term, saying to investors looking for a quick turnaround, "I encourage you not to invest in Apple."

I sold all my Apple stock in December, at $561. It's $526 now.

Bought Michael Kors (women's purses) at 80.51 It's $98.03 now. Since then I've bought a MacPro and and a MacBook Pro, but no purses. I'm still a loyal customer, and I'll be happy to buy the stock again when it makes sense for me to do so, and hold it for as long as it makes sense - I bought it in 2007. But I see no point in holding it right now. I'm loyal to the company and am a happy customer and promoter of their products. But there is no point in being loyal to a stock.

Though I would enjoy a sapphire iPhone, I think that is too much a task for the new factory right out of the gate. iWatch crystals would be a good ramp-up product.

Apple's Secret Project

GTAT is deeply involved in solar power as well as crystal production. Perhaps Apple has designed a much more efficient, sapphire-based, photovoltaic cell that GTAT will help bring to market.

This is Tim's biggest failing imo. He is right about secrecy but if you announce it first then yours will be choosen over even a first to market imitation.

Tim needs to learn that you get more from teasing and enticing people than being defensive saying theres great things but im not saying what. Your trying to sell products....

Laminate some sapphire between gorilla glass, just as Apple's multiple patents show, and you've got one hell of a durable screen.

Where you can use a sapphire glass?

1 - Laser Lenses (unlikely at apple )

2 - High end cellphones (ala Vertu, remeber Vertu's former sapphire glass specialist was hired by apple).

3 - SmartWach: obvious, from Rolex Sapphire glass is mandatory to any descent high end watch.

4 - Projector Lens: iTV Projecting iPad ? mmm

I vote for the next iPhone 6 and the iWatch to include such sapphire glasses.

BTW, Cook is lame on creating expectative

Tim is replacing all the staircases and glass paneling in the Apple stores with Sapphire.
No no, it's a product, right? Obviously Apple will be doing a line of high-end unbreakable glassware. You can drink to that.

This pretty much confirms the new "iPhone 6" will use a sapphire glass touchscren of around 4.8" (diagonal) size.
Not just the screen, the entire frame and back, too (think, everything that's aluminum on the current models).

Where's the mac mini? There's no secret there probably forgotten what a mac mini is with everything else going on either that or he's hoping we'll all forget about it. :)
"Mac Mini"...? What is this strange device I feel like I once used but cannot remember?!?!?!?

iOS aside... Apple's hardware is all about "Quality". That's why we keep coming back

I agree about their hardware in a lot of respects, but Apple's software is steadily getting worse and worse. I'd much prefer to see improvements in their software design and usability, far and above anything else they are currently involved in.

GS5 has many important new features and fingerprint sensor is not one of them. Here are the more important features:

* dust and waterproof body (IP67 certified)
* phase detection autofocus (first for smart phones)
* new larger 16MP camera ISOCELL sensor (first for any camera?)
* heart rate monitor (first for smart phones)
* USB 3.0

I particularly like the idea of a smartphone being IP67 certified which should be standard. That Apple won't make the iPhone dust and water resistant despite sitting on a gigantic mountain of cash is just plain irresponsible.

Apple cannot complain about being ripped off. All the front runners in every major industry copy each other. Just look at the car industry. Its called competition..

Tim Cook needs to quite his whining

Heavy lies the crown Apple

True, but if Toyota introduced a car that, from 50 feet, you couldn't tell it from a Mustang, you don't think Ford would be at the courthouse the next day? There IS a limit to what you can copy and get away with.

shhh.. its a secret ....

one way or another we'll find out...

I just wonder how much of a secret it is, can Apple actually keep their word on this one ?

But that doesn't mean he should not try to prevent being copied when possible.

That's just competent business practice for any company.

Don't forget...

5. iGlasses (Multi Billion Dollar Market)
Replace a well known and massively used product with a smarter one. We had this before. Would be a Kick A** move!

By things you can't see, does he mean 'taking readings of biometrics' or the device itself? Oh, so cryptic!

I can't deny, I am intrigued.
