The arab nations don't fare well when it comes to LGBT rights so it's strange to see Tim hobnobbing with folks who could see him as taboo. But I guess money talks.
It's even funnier when you think how people and the mass media are harping on Russia, while there are countries that are openly hostile to the LGBT groups getting a free pass.

So basically you're saying Steve was horrible at succession planning the board should never have allowed him to pick Apple's next CEO.

Steve never would have let this happen!!! (You'll have to imagine the foam flying from the mouths of people who say things like this.) Oh wait...

it really depends on the product code, for example MD103LL/A the LL/A you know its from US, and if its MD103ZA/A it is for the southeast asian market.
and if the product code is UAE/A that means its for the middle east market.

and my cousin got the UAE/A product code hence no facetime, just google it.

maybe you got it from an authorized reseller who got the product outside the UAE/A product code ?

I didn't buy my ipads from authorized dealers.

A lot of my friends usually get their igadgets from the UAE because it is cheaper than here in Qatar. This is honestly the first time I've heard of such a thing. I know in saudi facetime is blocked but the app is still pre installed.

 From what I gather, Tim Cook is dead weight everywhere. They had said he was some sort of supply-chain genius but I'm always seeing how product supply is completely falling behind demand for both the iPhone and new Mac Pro. He's definitely dead weight to the company. Apple is totally getting trounced by Samsung when it comes to moving products. Apple needs to build some huge robotic factories that spit iDevices out at mach speed. The news media says that every business deal Tim Cook makes is going to be a massive failure because almost no one can afford Apple products. So that isn't helping very much, either. Another quarter and Apple falls into an even deeper value abyss. Dammit! Apple has become a joke of a tech company scorned by the computer industry and Wall Street. :(

Apple and Samsung are very different companies with very different starting points, strategies, products and markets. All your points are ridiculous.

Board names CEO.

So Steve had no say or influence in who the board picked? And had no say or influence over who was selected to be on Apple's board?

I'm so sick of Steve sycophants absolving him of any responsibility over the current state of Apple.

Is it me, or does Tim always seem like he's out of the office in Cupertino and somewhere else? Shouldn't he be in the office as much as possible to work on products instead of traveling to nyc to meet with investors and things along those lines?

Tim is nothing but a hand picked face man riding out Steve Jobs inventions. Basically he is following a 2 year old blueprint that Jobs left behind. Only problem is that the blueprint is getting old and the face man has to get his knees dirty by going country to country kissing buttocks. It's pretty obvious that he does not stay in the lab creating new products. All he does for us is smile, talk game of new products in the pipeline, smile, announces revised products, smile and then bashes the competition.
And the people that are trying to create new product are second guessing and delaying. The lab rats are too comfortable with plenty of cheese in their bellies.

Oh ye of little gray matter.

The CEO's job is to basically be the president of the organization, not god.

He might be overseeing them from this incredible device called an iPhone.

Best I can tell he isn't much of a "logistics guy" or "big picture guy" either. I know Steve Jobs saw something in him but Cook hasn't let us know what that is yet. He's not even much of a "care taker guy," though I understand some people here admire him because Apple still takes in way more per quarter than they'll see in an lifetime, as if that was a usable metric.

How brain damaged can one statement be?

Tim Cook is the master mind of Logistics, Planning and Manufacturing that made him so valuable to Steven P. Jobs.

Your correct. It's not Apple vs. Samsung. It's Apple vs. Android. Motorola could easily surprise everyone with it's new management. If Samsung dies tomorrow Android is still alive. If Apple screws up that would be devastating to the entire brand. It would be the dark ages for Apple all over again.

I know about FaceTime Removed in UAE, also some other countries as well, and I guess this is critical for Apple to negotiate and seek for an agreement and fix that. This have to be fixed such the BBM some years ago if I'm not wrong though :)

He's "not a product guy". Apple should send him on a lifetime world tour and hire a CEO.

Sending the chief sends a very powerful message. In international business there are situations you send a VP or director but in most situations you need to send the CEO otherwise its offensive to host countries or partner corporations that you are not on close terms with.

Actually, Apple earns more per quarter than most companies will see in a lifetime. I'd say that's a very "usable" metric.

Here's what I don't understand: what exactly do people expect of Cook? He's done a pretty good job of running the company so far. And by that I mean he's done a good job of running a huge company; his title is "CEO of Apple," not "Miracle Worker." Here's my reasoning:

1. Apple's profits have increased every year since the debut of the iPhone, whether Jobs or Cook was in charge. It's not as though Apple is doomed. I think it's pretty impressive that their profits are still going up when they're already so astronomically high.

chart-of-the-day-the-astounding-growth-of-iphone-profits.jpg

2. Apple has to ship a whole lot more iPhones when launching a new device than any of their competitors, yet they still manage to ship the right amount. The "right amount" being enough to keep demand and popularity high, not one for every single person who wants an iPhone. Apple knows their s*** about supply and demand. If there was one iPhone for every person on planet Earth at launch, it would take forever to launch a product and demand would drop. You wouldn't see lines outside Apple Stores that display just how crazy people are for their products, which makes people without Apple products go "Hmm, there must be something cool about those devices if people want them so badly" and Apple's competitors go "Wow... Wish that was us."

3. Apple has done some pretty incredible stuff with display resolution and product weight while Cook has been in charge. Go hold an iPad Mini or Air at your local Apple Store, then compare it to the 4th gen iPad launched just one year earlier and see for yourself!

4. Making these products takes time. Many of the devices that have come out since Jobs's death were probably developed while he was alive for the most part. How much can we really attribute to Jobs, and how much to Cook? If the products are still great, who cares?

5. No one, not even Apple, "revolutionizes the industry" every two years, which is how long Cook has been CEO. Since Jobs came back to Apple in 1997, the company launched three groundbreaking product lines: the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Jobs was CEO for four years before the iPod came out! Was he a failure for those first four years because he didn't oversee the launch of a revolutionary product? Not at all.

6. What a bunch of entitled babies... "Waaaah, Apple hasn't made me an iWatch and an iTV yet, waaaah, Apple makes products I want but charge too much for them, waaaaah, Tim Cook isn't Steve Jobs." Apple doesn't owe you anything. If you like their products, buy them. If you don't like them or think they're overpriced, don't. Apple is a business. The point of what they do is to make money. I'm sure they're happy to hear about people's lives being improved by their products and that products that DON'T EVEN EXIST YET (iWatch and iTV) are in such high demand, because it means the money will keep pouring in. Ultimately, though, profit is the name of the game for them, so they will run their business in whatever fashion they think is most profitable. It's nothing malicious; that's just how businesses work. And if you ask me, Tim Cook knows EXACTLY what he's dong.

i really hope this is a start for something special for the middle east....we are tired of resellers over here we need true Apple stores.

When you're the boss you can do whatever you want. :D

Plus to be fair if you're going to meet Prime Minister's then you have to send the CEO.

Steve is deceased. There is nothing more he can do for Apple to the best of my knowledge.

Excellent point. Presence of the top man demonstrates respect. Thanks!

Well, we know Apple won't open a new store in Saudi Arabia, as Cook, an openly gay man, would be arrested and probably stoned to death in that country.

I was just thinking the same, when I saw your post. A difference between him and Jobs, is that the former whores himself out whenever possible, while the latter stayed more elusive (and thereby making his appearances seem more "precious").

"Whores himself out"

I'm amazed people can come out with this sort of crap. When SJ was in charge, it was always going to be TC or another member who dealt with the supply/demand stuff. Tim is doing absolutely nothing wrong. If he never made a public appearance, you'd say he's doing nothing, is introvert to the point of being damaging to Apple, and isn't helping growth or innovation.

If he goes out and makes deals with countries and carriers, he's suddenly a whore.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'd really like it if posters such as yourself could vaguely educate themselves on what it is to run a company such as Apple. Thank God armchair-CEOs don't hold any sort of influence.

Who do u think u r, John Scully? I never claimed that he should squirrel away (like u should).

Most of the executive leadership was put in place under Jobs. This is the team he groomed to take over for him. If people think Cook lacks vision or isn't a product guy and that's what Apple needs then why didn't Jobs recommend the board fill the CEO spot with someone who was a product guy with a vision (either internal or external)? The fact is, Cook is CEO because Jobs recommended he fill that spot. The board just rubber stammped what Jobs wanted.

Since when is Cook an openly gay man?

Steve is still dead. Apple Inc is an entity. Persons currently involved from Chairman to housekeeping are now responsible.

We'll talk again when Steve returns from the dead, OK?
