Well, on those little "Air" drives there's not a whole lot to back up, now, is there???

:p

Haha, touche. :D That made me smile.

Not that it takes much to make me smile. But I'm in scotland, and it's raining constantly the last week. And I'm about to head out into it :(

So cheers anyway :D

People bought the AEBS expecting what they got, so theres no real reason they 'have' to do it. Either way it works :D

Uh, no. Apple SAID it was going to work, and people went out and bought them for that reason.

Then they said "oops, sorry" we can't get it to work right now and dropped the feature from their website.

So this reasoning doesn't fly. They don't have to support it, but if they don't update it then it was REALLY sh***y of them to go and say it could on their website.

So the older Extreme stopped working with External USB drives? I thought it just wouldn't let you use Time Machine. I remember hooking up a USB drive to the older Airport Extreme and it worked.

I just want to know how the partitioning between the TM and Main partitions works. I want to get the 500 but I really don't want to use more than like 100GB for TM backups.

I'm not quite clear on the software...

Anyone know if I could plug in 2 external drives and assign each of my 3 computers to each of the 3 back-up drives?

So MacPro -> Time Capsule internal drive
iMac -> USB Drive 1
Macbook Pro -> USB Drive 2

Would that be possible or it just going to throw everything onto the first drive until it's full?

It's somewhat possible. You can assign each computer to a usb drive. However, you can only have one usb drive set up to Time Capsule, since there's only one usb port (and also assuming that usb hubs don't work). So you'd have to have 2 wireless back-up drives and one...well, not so wireless back-up drive. :D

It works but not as advertised IMO. I have one and gave up on AirDisk. It needs work. I'm gussing if Time Capsule works they should update AirDisk to work with AEBS. Not just with Time Machine but in general, AirDisk has issues.

Don't own one, but I was under that impression too: that drives worked, just time machine wouldn't.
Time Machine works a little bit under the AEBS (via hacks) but is not very reliable. USB disks do work but they are not as stable as they should be. Sometimes the entire USB connection, printers and disks, get dropped. Its not the stuff legends are made of, that's for sure.

Time Capsule is a nice solution for some users, but I don't see why the majority of users wouldn't just simply use an external USB/FW HDD of their own for backing up. They're cheaper than TC and if one was using a HDD enclosure they could easily upgrade their drive's capacity for a minimal cost when the time comes.

And yes, I realize there is the ability to back-up wirelessly, but I'd argue who really needs to do that? If you have a desktop machine, just have an external drive there. If you're mobile, hook one up when you want/need to back-up. Simple.

Lastly, as for the wireless gateway/base station functionality of TC, I do not know of any service providers here at least who do not offer a wireless home gateway with their Internet service. It is table stakes now, and free (here at least.) As a result, I would have no need for another wireless router such as TC.

Everyone's needs are different though. Just my comments....

Well, hubs "work" with the Extreme so I'm guessing they would with Time Capsule.

Say I have the time capsule hooked up to my internet connection and nothing else (ie: computer)

Would I be able to access the files on the time capsule remotely using my laptop?

Thanks

Still not gigabit though.

That's right, the lowest speed device is what limits the overall bandwidth.
USB Hi-Speed (USB 2.0) 480 Mbit/s 60 MB/s
Gigabit Ethernet (1000base-X) 1000 Mbit/s 125 MB/s

However vs Wireless maybe it's still an improvement.

802.11 legacy 0.125 2.0 Mbit/s 0.25 MB/s
RONJA free space optical wireless 10.0 Mbit/s 1.25 MB/s
802.11b DSSS 0.125 11.0 Mbit/s 1.375 MB/s
802.11b+ non-standard DSSS 0.125 44.0 Mbit/s 5.5 MB/s
802.11a 0.75 54.0 Mbit/s 6.75 MB/s
802.11g OFDM 0.125 54.0 Mbit/s 6.75 MB/s
802.16 (WiMAX) 70.0 Mbit/s 8.75 MB/s
802.11gt DSSS 0.125 (aka Super G) 108.0 Mbit/s 13.5 MB/s
802.11n 248.0 Mbit/s 31 MB/s

Sorry for the formatting.

I don't see why not - I believe you can do something similar if you had an Airport Extreme, so TC should work as well...

Edit: Beaten to it! ;)

Well, the other problem is is that AirDisk doesn't even work on Leopard for just as a normal HD. Look on the Apple Discussion board. Most people can't get AirDisk to stay connected reliably especially after putting the machines to sleep. For now, I'd be happy if Apple actually fixed AirDisk for what it has said and still says it is for as an NAT. Once they fix that, maybe I'll expect Time Capsule to work.

Pretty weak that you need Time Capsule to support Time Machine backups to USB drives...

You don't. If you put a USB drive on any Mac running Leopard, you can backup to it. However, I agree that the restrictions are weak. Time Machine should have been designed to back up to any AFP shared volume.

i am surprised why nobody has even bothered to file class action suit against Apple for "misrepresentation" of Time Machine over air capabilities through Airport Extreme Base Station.

The timing was very problematic for Apple because current AEBS was released at least 2 months before Leopard came out.
