Time Capsule... but AFP is deprecated?

So I'm here using my Time Capsule and Ive heard AFP is deprecated in Big Sur. So what's it using? Its not SMB as I ran
smbutil statshares -a
and nothing came up (will tell you the metrics on your SMB shares if they're mounted)

And the get info on the volume doesn't tell me anything, though it does say "Kind" is "Sharepoint".

Is that an indicator that its using AFP?

It's using AFP. Big Sur can connect to AFP shares, it just can't do AFP sharing. You can verify by using the command "mount" in Terminal.

Ah got it. While Ive got you, two questions I wonder if you have insight into:

a) the cheapest best SMB network storage for a Time Capsule
b) the low down on the Mac Sharing Mode - Apple Silicon Macs to Feature New Boot and Recovery ...www.macrumors.com › 2020/06/25 › apple-silicon-macs-...

Specifically, Mac OS X has had a way to do TCP/IP over many mediums. I wonder if this new version will be able to do that such that we could still use Thunderbolt for a transfer. I really hate the idea of being stuck with WIFI or gigabit Ethernet (if it even supports USB ethernet adapters).

FWIW - Time Capsule has worked for me on every beta (since beta 3) and still works fine for what I use it for - and connects with Mojave just fine - Mojave is still my working / daily driver - but the screen shot is from Big Sur

The native filesystem on Time Capsule is HFS+.
This is no problem. TimeMachine creates a disk image for every different computer backed up. That will use whatever format is preferred by its version of TimeMachine.
My Mac mini "server" is still using Sierra. I prefer its unified admin console. It has a stack for USB disks for the household all formatted HFS+. There is no trouble backing up Catalina or Big Sur.

No, it cannot connect to AFP shares. The filesystem driver cannot load because a required kext is unavailable in Big Sur - including, infuriatingly, in recovery mode. Any attempt to mount an AFP volume results in "the server is unavailable" and a console log entry saying "invalid argument".

Wow ok they did it. My Time Capsule works so there must be some allowance there.

Big Sur definitely does connect to a Time Capsule over AFP, even when mounting the disk manually. I also have netatalk running on a Raspberry Pi and Big Sur will connect to that over AFP as well.

Are you upgraded from a Beta? Mine is a fresh downgrade from Catalina to Big Sur, out of the box totally unable to mount any AFP volumes - the network filesystem driver cannot load because a required kext "com.apple.nki.asp_tcp" cannot load.

I have a 16" MBP that went from Catalina to Big Sur 11.0.1 and a 2018 13" MBP that went through a lot of betas. Both connect to AFP without an issue.
