I keep getting a backup failed error. I am using an Apple time capsule with a MacBook Pro. I know that Apple discontinued the time capsule years ago. What should I replace it with?

Literally any modern router sold these days have usb support where you can connect an external hard drive to it. So any router really.

I am pretty sure the router part is still working. I just ordered this external hard drive. Unless someone can suggest something else. Open to all suggestions.

Oh I thought you meant the whole thing was busted. I'd swap the hard drive out with a faster 7200rpm drive if you are tech savvy and can open it up. Or you can do the external USB route.

I got mine back in 2009 and it still works to this day lol.

I just rebooted both my macbook pro and the time capsule and it did the last backup.

I just want to be able to do a wireless backup.

I am not tech savy

It will work fine. When the WD disk is connected to the Time Capsule then in Mac disk utility select the new WD disk then click erase and select the Mac OS extended option. It's then being formatted to Mac OS. On the Mac Time Machine settings add the WD as a new disk and it's ready to go, good luck.

Since I am not very tech-savvy. I have a question? If I get the external and attach it to the time capsule, can I have my MacBook pro backup to both at that same time? That way I have 2 backups?

Yes, after adding the WD in the Mac Time Machine settings you will backup to both disks, see below (sorry it's in Danish language :) ).

Same here! A few years back I put a 2TB 2.5” drive in my 2008 time capsule and it’s been rocking out ever since. The 2.5” drive generates a ton less heat than the old 3.5” drive did.

How did it go? Hopefully no issues.

Worked perfectly!!! I plugged in an external hard drive into the back of the time capsule. I feel much more comfortable knowing I have 2 backups. Thank you!!!
