Hi guys,

I have just bought a time capsule (3TB) and in an attempt to limit the space that time machine takes up I spoke to Apple Care and they suggested a 2TB sparsebundle file that I use for personal files etc...

However, while playing, I have noticed that this is only accesible from 1 machine (which kind of mutes the point of it all.

Anyway, my question is can I just delete this sparsebundle like any other file and get the 2 TB back (assume so as it isn't a partition)? I'm unsure as I've never really had anything to do with this type of structure before.

Then is it just a case of right click, delete or is it more complicated?

Many thanks,

Phil

You just go into the airport utility app and in the disk tab click erase and rename if you want. That will give you the original drive format. But you will lose your data, so backup.

If the sparsebundle file you're talking about is one you created (and it sounds like this is the case), I'm more than 99% sure you can just right-click and delete it. I've added and deleted my own files to the TC internal drive and they've never affected the backups. However, none of those happened to be sparsebundle files. I don't think it makes a difference, though -- my understanding is that the .sparsebundle format is just another disk image format.

I'm curious why your experimental file was only accessible from 1 machine? I've put regular files there and accessed them from Windows XP, etc. Of course only Macs could access .sparsebundle files but any other Macs you own should be able to do that.

time capsule moving and copying folders

Hi,

I needed to merge 2 folders with the same name, but it just copied new version and I lost the old version folder. How can I recover this old folder? How come this doesn't use the merge option?? many thanks, hopefully you can help me recover my important files...
