I have set up my Time Capsule and am using an ethernet cable to connect it to my MacBook. When I plug it in I click the Time Machine button in the top right and can get an immediate back up of my files. Or if I let my computer stay on for an hour it will automatically back up. Can I close my computer and let it sleep while plugged in or does my computer need to be open an on for back ups to happen automatically?

If you're running your computer in clamshell mode (w/ external monitor) then your computer will backup - assuming it isn't sleeping or off.

However, if you haven't updated your files since it went to sleep - there is no need to backup.

FYI: If your computer is put to sleep or off during a backup it will return an error when it comes back on (circle with an explanation in it). This will resolve once backup runs again.

Cheers.
