Hi guys!

I have a late 2011 macbook pro 17" which I just today picked up a beautiful Time Capsule 2TB for, to connect over wifi and have time machine backups.

Since my current wifi is coming from a 4G modem without ethernet ports I cant connect my new TC to internet using a ethernet cable..

I've searched a lot online and cant find any guide on how to make this work for me.

To sum up:
Need my time capsule (and time machine) to work without ethernet cable plugged in.
How can I do that?

Both your MBP and TC must be on the same wifi network. But no cable needed.
Well. How do I get TC on the Wifi network? To my knowledge there is no way to configure this?
Pls provide a link or describe to me how I could do this.

Thanks! :)

Thx for the link, but I already found the link.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for my situation.
The link provided is for another type of problem.
I tried as well, but no success.. still seems that I need the god damned ethernet cable!

This drives me crazy. spent many hours on this issue now.

It's a terrible idea to have the TC using wifi. Wifi is a shared medium, so you're devastating your potential throughput and performance doing it this way. The throughput will be very poor, although if your Mac is using a wired connection then you can mitigate this to some degree. Using a wireless Mac to backup to a wireless TC on the same network will be horrific.

I don't have a TC, but this should be possible I would think. Do you have the Router Mode set to OFF (Bridge Mode) on the Network tab?

Wireless backup to a Time Capsule works fine. The Time Capsule, and Time Machine itself, are slow so there's not much in the way of a performance penalty there.

yes, I agree.

But how about me question in OP?

You could have the Time Capsule make a separate wifi network and connect to that, which would likely disconnect your 4G modem. You obviously wouldn't have internet access at that point, however.

Yes, but thats what I want to avoid..

I want to stay online as well as having TM making backups in the background

There is a significant penalty. It's unavoidable, it's how the technology works. It might be "slow" even at the best of times, but it's still crippling the potential throughput by backing up from a wireless device to another wireless device on the same wireless network.

Not trying to argue your point, certainly it might be a case of "slow" vs "really, really, really slow", but there's heavy hit.

The latest generation is 3x3 802.11ac, it’s quite a capable device.

So, you mean your internet is a 4g hotspot with no ethernet port, is that right? I would make the TC the primary wifi, connect your computers to it, and then get a wireless ethernet bridge to connect to the hotspot and then connect the bridge to the TC with ethernet.

or, you MIGHT be able to get the TC to connect to the hotspot in BRIDGE mode and connect it to the hotspot and then the TC would create it's own wifi network as well.

Yes, you are right, my internet is 4G hotspot without any ethernet port.

Could you describe more in detail how to do that, or maybe provide a link?
