I have about 1TB of data on my TC. I am in the process of copying this data from the TC to my iCloud Drive. The process was kicked off from my MBP running High Sierra 10.13.1 beta 3. The MBP is connected to my Xfinity wifi. The TC is connected via ethernet to my Xfinity Router. I used finder to navigate to the TC folder with my data and I copied and pasted it to iCloud Drive in finder. I understand this is going to take a while.

My questions:

1
Is the transfer request being routed over wifi from the TC through the MBP to iCloud?

or

2
Is the request going straight from the TC to iCloud via ethernet through my Xfinity router?

I am just curious as it is hard to tell because Xfinity blows on upload speeds and caps at something ridiculously small. So I am not sure the wifi route vs. ethernet route would make a difference, but I am curious how the TC handles these things. Funny, I always watch those FIOS commercial bragging about the Up/Download speeds being the same and how Xfinity doesn't compare. I used to say big deal, who cares about upload speed? Well this is certainly a case I guess.

You have two steps involved here.

First the data is moving from TC > through the XF router over ethernet > then from the router to your MBP over wifi.

Then second once the data gets on the MBP it is being uploaded to iCloud from MBP wifi > through the XF router > out over the Internet.

Thanks. That’s what I thought. I probably should have started this transfer from the iMac that is connected to the Ethernet of both routers directly.

Follow-up: Is there a way to copy/upload directly to iCloud without saving it on my machine first? Running out of space!

Nope... it has to go through your Mac first.
Thanks, that is going be tough given it's >1TB and my internal SSD is 256GB, although it does seem to be transferring, pausing, uploading and transferring again to free up space.

The other thought I had was to use a Windows PC and the iCloud windows app. I believe that is a direct transfer. I have the same data on the TC on and external drive.
