what's the average transfer speed if you want to send a file to the Time Capsule or acces a file from it? would it be, for example, fast enough to stream HD video from it?

it is fast enough for that...the problem i have with it is streaming to apple tv...lets say i have a hd movie on the timecapsule and i got to play it on appletv it basicly has to go from the time capsule to my imac then to the apple tv all at the same time and apple tv doesnt like it ....lots of buffering...now my time capsule is like 50 feet away from the aapple tv and the imac kinda in the middle all on 5gh so maybe the range has something to do with it i seem to get a much better signal on 2.4 but 5gh is still faster even though it says its less powerful

Are you using wired gigabit Ethernet of wireless? Makes a huge difference.
