As the Time Capsule Gets Full, it becomes slower, as i think it scans all the data before you access etc.

This is probably the case -- Time Machine spends a lot of time starting and finishing the process. But as I asked above -- who cares, and why? It all happens with no user intervention, and no penalty that I can detect. So don't watch the grass grow, don't wait for the paint to dry, don't watch the pot come to a boil.

I Own and actively (Well, its on, and doing its thing) use a 500Gb Time Capsule, and its a well made product, and it does its job. Its not directly aimed at storing files on, and if you need a file, you generally know what its called, so can search it in the Time Machine Finder Search Bar.

I Might Sell My Time Capsule, or Upgrade it to a 1Tb Green Drive to help keep it cool, as soon my MBP will have a 500Gb Drive aswell. Really Rambling now :D

That's true. Look at the attached screen shot!!

Browsing around TM from finder is fine. Transferring files to TC is slow as is using the TM interface.

I think I'm going to dump TC and invest in a Western Digital Studio external FireWire 800 HDD and connect my iMacs to that via a FireWire 800 hub.

My TM performance at the moment is ridiculous.

Before I did anything, I'd call Apple support. I presume your Time Capsule is still under warranty. I'm not sure I entirely follow the description of your problem, but it certainly doesn't sound normal.

I took a screenshot movie into the Apple Geniuses and they are going to replace the TC drive on Tues. I guess I will loose all of my backups from 4 Macs :(

TC did work fine before and I'm not sure sure I trust it any longer, thus my thoughts on moving to an external drive.

Like I said, the situation you describe does not sound normal. BTW, no matter what else you do, you might consider buying an external USB drive and plugging that into the TC. You can set it up to automatically backup the TC.

My issue is the TM interface is so slow for me it's unusable

For example I have just told it to delete all copies of the parallels folder. After an hour and I am still waiting for the confirmation/authorisation screen to open!!! It's that slow.

It does seem to be broken. Hopefully you'll have better luck with your replacement. Do still look into the MediaSmart - being Windows Home Server based, it's a significantly better solution for multi-machine backups. It does help to be a Mac/Win shop though, as the best features of it are on the Windows side.

I did exactly that, upgraded my 500gb TC to 1gb with a WD Green and it made a big difference in heat. I was also shocked to find how much that 500gb drive I pulled out vibrated (I put it in a USB case)..... it is significant! The WD Green is cool and quiet with no bad vibes... :D

Hi Tom Sawyer. I was wondering if I could ask you a question. Since you've done the mod on your TC, what did you use to place the heat sensor back on the new hard drive? I'm thinking of upgrading mine and haven't quite figured out what's the best adhesive to use if any (some people have suggested it should still be sticky enough to reapply) and I'm holding out on opening it up until I have everything covered. TIA.

I was pretty careful (took my time) when I pealed off the retainer clip for the heat sensor and it retained the adhesive with no problem. Stuck it right on the new drive and was in good shape. If you peal it slowly, it should stay on the plastic (maybe hold breath as well...) The worst part is pealing off the bottom rubber foot... it's on there with strong adhesive. It sticks to one surface or the other just fine, went back on with no problem as well. Best of luck! :)

I just purchased a Western Digital MyBook Studio 1TB and connect to it via FireWire 800.

It performed its first 45GB backup in less than a hour. It's a million times faster than my TC ever was using GB Ethernet.

Awesome, i'll do that in the Summer, im wondering how to remove the rubber foot easily, maybe if i leave it off so its completely cool? As the glue would be stickier when hot? (I Pulled off the foot on my old TC)

Using Time Machine or what other method? I'd certainly hope that FW 800 would be faster than ethernet.
