What's in a name...

Not sure what the recent issues are, but for years, Cox Cable has had some kind of Proxy or NAT keeping their users from being able to accept certain inbound connections.

I have had to set up the Apache server on my Macs (G5, G4 Mirrored Drive Doors, G4 Mini, G4 Cube, etc) many times and I have become quite good at it. I mainly use the website I run on my Mac (with the help of DynDNS) to serve up photos, funny videos, and tools I use to fix my friends' PCs.

Well, since my Dad (in Omaha, NE) is really into genealogy and restoring old family photos, I suggested he run a site directly from his Mac. This way, he could create a family album that family members could access from around the world and that he could completely control the content of. (He's tried a couple sites out there that don't allow certain types of content, such as MP3's, even though the files were of speeches that my great grandfather gave in his native language.)

So anyways...

I got Apache up and running on his Mini and went to Safari and typed in 192.168.0.x (x being the network number assigned to his Mac). No problem, the website came right up.

I went to the router and DMZ'd his Mac to allow it to accept all inbound traffic. (Yeah, I could've just created a tunnel for Port 80, but I'm lazy.)

I then went to a website and got his apparent IP address and typed that into Safari and got nothing. Shut off the firewall, got nothing. Direct connected to the modem, got nothing.

Cox is doing something to redirect or block inbound ports at their end.

Fun stuff I can do in my hometown on my own cable provider's network, that I can't do on Cox Cable, such as:
• Log into my Mac remotely from a relative's house or from college.
• Set up HTTP and FTP servers and log into them remotely. (Who needs a thumb drive when you can access your Mac from either another Mac or a PC via FTP? 4GB stick, or 500GB network drive, your choice?)
• Print to my Brother laser printer from across town at a relative's house via IPP through my Mac. (Who needs a fax machine?)

Cox Cable really needs to get with the times. The internet is an ever changing place, and it doesn't look like Cox is keeping up.

Hope this information helps, guys.
