I currently already have a router and have to use it because it is also my land line (T-mobile @ home), but I am very interested in the idea of TC wirelessly and automatically backing up my laptop. Can I use TC just as a backup device and only plug it into the wall?
 
well, you could but you would have to manually connect to it through wifi every time you want to do a backup, kind of taking the "automated" out of automated backups....


My advice would be to get an ISP that isn't total crap.

Yes. The TC can join your existing wireless network, and your Mac can backup to it wirelessly.
 
Or you can connect your TC to your current router via Ethernet, run it in bridge mode, and have it act as a separate wireless gateway to your network in the process. You can connect to either network created by either router and still back up to your TC.
