I want to do a TM backup. However, Time Machine and Finder won't recognize my external hard drive. I opened Disk Utility and the physical disk is recognized, but the Time Machine partition is greyed out. Any suggestions?

How is it formatted? Out of the box many are NTFS, which TM won't support

It is Mac formatted. It worked before and already has my backups on it. It just doesn't get recignized now.

Just checked it, the disk is fine.

The disk being greyed out means it's not mounted. Click on it and click Mount in the toolbar on the top of the Disk Utility window. Report back if it gives you an error trying to do that.

I tried connecting the disk, and it spontaneously started working. I'll keep that in mind next to it happens. Thanks!
