Time Machine and Mavericks question

Can I restore a Mac from backup (Time Machine) if the backup files are running Mavericks and the Mac I want to restore is running Mountain Lion?

Let's say I've got a computer running Mavericks and I buy a new one running Mountain Lion. When I restore the new one from Time machine backup, will it work?

Worse case scenario is that you'll end up with Mavericks on your new machine. From there, you can downgrade to OS X Mountain Lion from the developer center (where you got the Mavericks download from developer.apple.com)
